I glance at Ares as we watch the other recruits from the rooftop. We’re both dressed in similar dark outfits. But while he only wears a knife at his waist, as one of a handful of shifters here who can partially shift, I’m strapped down with weapons on nearly every inch of me.

Still, in a moment where we both typically look a little like smug assholes, the moment before we win yet another challenge, he instead looks upset. I can almost feel his wolf beneath his surface, pacing in frustration.

But even though anyone in his life would be surprised to see the quiet guy so upset, I’m not. Mercy has always had this effect on him. As bad as I am about hiding the way I feel about her, he’s so much worse at it. I swear if she wasn’t completely unaware of the feelings of others around her, she would see him for exactly who he is...a guy who’s been offering her his heart on his sleeve all his life.

The paper in my hands draws my eye, and I see the words, take the stolen item from one person.

Looking back down at the courtyard, I see Mercy standing alone. She radiates...something. Something I can’t quite put my finger on, as she stands, unmoving.

On any other test, in any other situation, Ares and I would’ve already split up to follow the recruits and take their items. But having Mercy here changed everything. Instead of hunting the other recruits like enemies, we’re strategically deciding when to ruin her life.

Because no matter what happens in this test, we’ll win. We always win. Which is why instead of being sent to simply find and sneak an item back out, we’re charged with stealing it from another assassin-in-training or recruit. The guild keeps trying to come up with new challenges to give us to keep us close to the vampire prince. Otherwise, we would’ve graduated long ago.

“So, we destroy her chances, right?” Ares says, and he doesn’t sound happy about it.

“That’d be the easiest path, to get her kicked out on day one.”

He doesn’t respond, but I’ve known him for so long that I already know what he’s not saying.

“I know you don’t want to hurt her again.”

He bows his head, casting his face in shadows, and his fingers tear through his hair, making the dark strands stand on end. “What we have to do here...I...if there was any chance for her to forgive us, that will destroy it.”

“It’s already gone,” I say, leaving no room for argument, even though there’s a spark of hope inside of me too.

He drops his hands and sighs. “Okay, let’s do this.”

“Slide of hand?”

He nods at the suggestion of one of our familiar tricks, then turns and races back down the stairs. I watch him go and sigh. This will almost be too easy.
