The witch is dead. The kill a surprisingly easy one. Her head sits in the bag at my hip, meaning I completed my task exactly as the guild requested. I had lurked in the shadows, watching her perform a spell I didn’t understand, one that ended in the squirrels in a cage near her all exploding. Their blood ran down into cracks on the floor, and then her dress changed into an elaborate red one. She’d grinned in the mirror, complimented herself, and I felt not an ounce of guilt when I came up behind her and buried my knife into the vein in her neck before yanking it back out.

And I must be a sick bastard because I tossed her body on top of the cage of dead squirrels.

She deserved worse. The animal-killing asshole.

But it was when I was going to leave that the trouble began. I reached the balcony when two men appeared on the balcony next to mine. I’d ducked down, peering between the stone columns to watch them, waiting for them to leave so I could escape. Time was not on my side. The bodies would be found eventually, and I did not want to be caught inside with my enemies. Still, there was no way the men wouldn’t see me if I tried to leave now. I could try to circle back through the castle, but my instincts said it was safer to wait and leave the way I’d come.

Bash’s voice came over the mic in my ear, but it was scrambled, and I couldn’t exactly respond right now even if it was working. Any sound, any movement, and I’d be discovered.

So, I take deep breaths and try like hell to ignore it when I hear Ares’ scrambled voice, and then it completely cuts out. I don’t know if it’s them or me that’s the problem, but either way, it seems we can no longer communicate with each other.

“The grounds are quiet,” the man on the balcony says, in an amused voice, like he’s the one cutting the perfect grass, which I really doubted.

“Too quiet,” a soft, harsh voice whispers in response.

The first man laughs. “You worry too much. Not every night is filled with danger and death.”

There is a raspy breath. “It has been for me.”

My eyes narrow. What the hell is with that softer voice? It sounds… familiar in a way I can’t quite place. Not like an old friend, but almost like when you’ve heard the waves of the ocean and recognize them years later when returning to a seaside town. It isn’t a sound that’s distinctive to one person, not exactly. It’s hard to explain.

“Do you think the guild realized we were involved?”

A raspy pause. “They will follow the breadcrumbs to us.”

“Good,” the other voice said, so smugly that I kind of want to kill him too. “When will we be ready for them?”

“Soon.”

The man laughs. “You know that you can trust me, right? I’m your second-in-command. I want the guild to suffer the same way you do.
