SLEEP, INTERRUPTED

By the time I the other guard got back I was exhausted and ready to go back to my rooms. Sleep claimed me as soon as my head touched the pillow, which is why I screamed when Knox burst into my rooms and flipped on the lights without so much as a knock.

He clapped his hands over his ears till I was silent and then said, “Is that really necessary?”

This annoyed me greatly, probably because he just woke me up but the sass in me was the first to grab the wheel, “Was it necessary to burst into the room where I was sleeping and flip on a light as the door slammed closed behind you? Because most people fucking knock.”

“I’m the king, nobody cares about that. At least, not to my face.”

“I am going to scream every single time you do that to me. And if you continue to talk to me for too long now without getting to the point of why you felt you had to come bother me right this minute, I may decided to scream till you leave the room.”

“You wouldn’t,” he says with his eyes narrowed.

“Try me sir. I value my sleep and you have taken me from it. Why are you here?”

He brandishes some papers as he begins to pace my room, “Why didn’t you mention any of this? There is so much here. Why didn’t you talk about how she treated you?”

My fuzzy sleep-deprived brain registers that papers and I realize those must be Dagma’s letters. Rubbing my face with both hands for a tiny bit of wakefulness I tell him, “It wasn’t pertinent to what I came her to get help with. I needed help with ensuring the inheritance goes as my father intended so that I can keep our people happy and safe. My history had nothing to do with that.”

Knox looks like his head might pop off and begin to orbit the planet. “Not pertinent? Not pertinent? Are you joking? She has a long history of cruelty, especially towards you. This matters” He strides across the room toward me, grabbing my arms and snatching me up to my knees so I am face to face with him, “You matter! How can you not see that? Nothing she did is ok, and you deserve so much better than any of this.”

I am so stunned I don’t know what to do as he wraps his arms around me and holds me close. But the closeness is really nice, it feels so safe here in his arms. I snuggle into him, my eyes drooping, maybe he would let me sleep here? He smells so nice. Next thing I know he is laying me back in the spot I had been sleeping in before he snatched me up. His face is tender as he covers me with a blanket, but my eyes are heavy and close though I want to study the tender look and find out who it is for.
