CHAPTER SEVEN

All three of them stopped breathing.

Jules stopped crying.

He stood and went to the window and pulled back the curtains. He looked outside and stepped away, his face a shade paler than it had been before.

Del and Sera didn’t need to look. They could see the expression on Jules’ face. They could hear the roar of engines and the guttural chug as the motorcycles slowed and came up to the motel.

They heard shouting, and Del peered outside to see the first of the bikers pointing a sawn-off shotgun at the windows of the front office. Del couldn’t see the proprietor from where he was, but a moment later, the boom gate was raised, and the Bushrangers charged in, almost thirty of them. Driving in circles around the parking lot and revving their engines.

One by one, they came to a stop, leaning to the side and using their feet like kickstands. All of them brandishing either guns or knives or pipes or chains. Bandanas over their mouths to conceal their identities, but Del could swear at least some of them were smiling. Eager for blood.

The apparent leader of the group, the one Del assumed was Bill Marston, dismounted his metal steed and stepped forward. He took an AK47 from where it was slung over his handlebars on its shoulder strap, and held it in one hand.

“Come on out,” he called. “We ain’t leavin’ without you.”

Del felt his blood run cold.

Bill Marston cut a tall, gaunt figure in the dim light of the parking lot. He had a greying beard and long, scraggly hair tied back in a ponytail. Judging by the way his eyes crawled over the motel building, he didn’t know which room Jules was in, and was looking for any sign that might indicate the man’s whereabouts.

“Don’t make me come door to door,” Bill called. “I promise it’ll be easier if you come down of your own accord.”

Del stepped back from the window and turned to Sera and Jules. He checked his gun. Full clip meaning fifteen bullets plus one in the chamber.

“How many you got?” he said.

Jules didn’t need to check his gun. “Fifteen.”

“Alright, well...in that case, we just need to get them all with headshots and we should be fine.”

Neither Sera or Jules were impressed.

“I count about thirty out there,” Del said. “How about you, Jules?”

But Jules didn’t answer. Instead, he walked over to the dresser and laid his gun down. Then he went to the door.

“Jules...” Sera said.

He stopped with his hand on the knob and turned to her. “I’m not letting you die because of me. What have I got to live for anyway?”

Neither of them gave an answer, and that seemed to be an answer in itself. He nodded, turned back to the door.

“Wait,” Sera said. “This is crazy.”

“If I don’t go out there, they’re gonna come looking. We’re not the only ones in this building, and I’ve got enough blood on my hands as it is.”

Sera looked to Del, pleading with her eyes for him to do something.
