"So you think your cat-book project will be a success?" Michael asked that evening as he and Savannah prepared for bed.

"We sure had a lot of interest among the alliance members."

"Of course they'd be interested," he said. "Most of them have cats in there."

Savannah shrugged. "That's true, but aside from the two books each member and guest bought today, we got orders for an additional one hundred. Oh, make that one hundred and fifty," she said. "The Garber sisters came to the meeting. Well, they missed the meeting, but they got here in time to see the book, and they ordered fifty copies. They're thinking about setting up a little boutique near their theaters where they can sell books and things—you know, my books about Rags and the fund-raiser book."

He studied her for a moment and she said, "What?"

"Well, it just seems odd to me that you're becoming chummy with the Garber sisters."

"Why?" she asked.

"They don't seem your type."

"I have a type?"

"We all have a type," he insisted.

She cocked her head. "Do say?"

"Well, yeah." He frowned. "Although I was surprised when you and Iris hooked up. I didn't think she was your type, either; I mean she's a little wild, or was at one time. She's old enough to be your mother, and she's kind of colorful." Before Savannah could speak, he said, "And your aunt. The two of you are so different; I wouldn't think you would be so close."

"Hmmm," she mused.

"And there's Colbi," he continued. "She's less sophisticated than you are—you know, she's younger and all."

"Not that much younger," Savannah defended. She frowned. "Who do you think should be my friends? You've just blackballed practically all the people I enjoy most."

"Rochelle," he said. "Yes, the two of you are a good match. And Shelly. She fits in with who you are."

"Interesting," Savannah said. "Well, maybe opposites do attract."

"Yeah, in couples, but not in friends, do you think?" he asked.

She shrugged. "I never thought about it. I just hang around with who I like and feel comfortable with and have a rapport with."

"Well, that's an odd way to choose your friends," Michael said.

"You're kidding, right?" she asked.

"No," he said. "I didn't think I was. You don't agree with my observations?"

"Not really," she said. "But no, I don't think the Garber sisters will become some of my best buddies. We sort of run in different circles and have different lifestyles." She frowned and added, "You know what? You've kind of shaken my confidence when it comes to my most meaningful friendships. I think I'd like to get some sleep, if I can, after hearing your rather warped assessment of my social behavior."

"Oh, hon," he said, pulling her to him. "I didn't mean anything. I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings or something. I sure didn't mean to. I thought we were just having a conversation—you know, about frivolous stuff."

She pulled back. "Now you think my friendships are frivolous? Certainly not to me."

"No, I didn't mean that at all. You're a wonderful friend—loyal and…"

"Like a dog?" she blurted.
