Elijah

I was walking with my chest puffed out as I held Joey’s hand. I was the one taking him into school while Michelle finished getting ready at the hotel. Joey was walking along just as proudly, telling all the kids he saw that I was his dad.

“Bye, Joey. Have a good day and we’ll pick you up after school. We’ll go look at that new place together, okay?”

He smiled and nodded. “Bye, Dad.”

I walked down the sidewalk and back to Michelle’s car. A month ago, I would have never thought any of this was possible, but here I was, both a dad and a man in love.

After driving back to the hotel, I picked up Michelle and headed to the courthouse. I knew Michelle was nervous. She was convinced Nick or Liam or both of them would get out on bail. We weren’t sure what they were being charged with, but I was prepared to offer up more evidence to the DA if it meant keeping them behind bars.

We waited in the courtroom, sitting a few rows back, not wanting to be too close to either man. When they were brought in, Michelle stiffened.

“It’s okay,” I whispered.

We listened to Liam’s arraignment first. Both Nick and Liam were being charged with false imprisonment and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The judge granted bail but set it at one hundred grand each. I knew neither of them could post the ten percent they needed to get a bond.

Once they were taken out of the courtroom, Michelle and I waited to talk to the DA. He was an older man with a strong presence and he could be intimidating, which was probably a good thing considering he was on our side.

“What kind of time are they looking at?” I asked.

The DA shrugged. “I’m hoping to get the maximum, twenty years each.”

Michelle gasped. “Twenty years!”

The DA nodded. “I know who these men are, and I know I could do some digging and put them away for longer if I needed to. Racketeering is one of the charges I’m considering.”

“Is there a chance they’ll get off?” Michelle asked, concern on her face.

The DA smiled. “Not with me prosecuting them.”

I smirked. “Thank you. As you know, they’ve sworn to come after her.”

“We’ll get a restraining order in place, but they’re not going anywhere. It isn’t going to be necessary. I promise you I’ll get them both locked up. It’ll be up to the judge to decide how long, but I will push for the maximum considering the seriousness of their crimes.”

Michelle nodded, seeming to relax a bit.

“Let’s go,” I said. “They’re not going anywhere anytime soon.”

We left the courthouse and went to check out a couple apartments.

“Stop!” Michelle said, and I hit the brakes.

“What? What’s wrong.”

She smiled. “Look at that house. It’s got a for rent sign in the yard.”

I pulled up to the curb along a street filled with homes that were part of a nice suburb.

“Do you want to check it out?”

She cringed. “I don’t know.
