Because of the rain and the darkness, Sheriff Hounslow brought in large tarps and powered lights. He cleared the area, forcing Jeff, Elizabeth, Mrs. Kottler, and other curious staff members to go back to the recreation room. They crowded around the sliding glass door and watched from a distance. The rookie officer Nick had turned green when he saw the grave-like hole. Hounslow told him to “wait at the center with the rest of the women and children.” The sheriff remained, a bleak figure in the pouring rain watching the diggers.

The lights produced an eerie glow in the woods that made the tall, thin trees look like silhouettes of matchsticks.

“It’s like a UFO landed out there,” Jeff observed.

The officers didn’t have to dig for very long before Nick’s radio came to life. “We found something … a box. A pretty big box too.”

Big enough to hold an old man? Jeff thought. Nobody dared ask that question out loud.

Nick looked green again. “What’s in it?” he asked over his radio.

No one answered.

The recreation room door flew open, startling the small crowd. Malcolm walked in and stopped, surprised to have all eyes on him as he lowered his umbrella and took off his jacket. “What happened? Where’s Sheriff Hounslow?”

Jeff took Malcolm aside and quietly explained everything.

Just then the radio crackled.

“What?” Nick asked. “What is it?”

“It’s … it’s his stuff,” the tinny voice of the officer finally reported.

“Stuff?”

“The box is packed with Mr. Hounslow’s stuff from his room,” the voice on the radio announced. “Looks like there’s a second box with … yeah, more of the same. That’s all.”

A moment later Sheriff Hounslow burst through the patio doors, clutching his father’s baseball cap. “Just what in blazes is going on here?” he shouted to no one in particular.
