I followed the GPS in my truck out into a part of Willow Valley that I had never ventured. When I was a kid, there was nothing here but empty fields. Now as I drove down the road, a few small subdivisions lined the street. I could already see the retirement home in the distance. I pulled into the visitors parking and slid into a parking spot, cutting my engine.
I hadnât planned on coming out here. Iâd planned to go visit Jed in the hospital, but when Iâd called earlier to see if I could come and visit him, theyâd advised me to call his son. Jack was more than happy to hear from me and apologized for not calling sooner. He let me know that his father had decided to move into the retirement home upon release. So, he had obliged the old man and got him settled in. During our conversation, he did mention he was rather worried about his father and hoped that perhaps a visit from me might help lift his spirits.
I wandered through the halls in the direction the front desk had given me until I came upon Jedâs room. I looked in through the door. He lay in bed, on his back, staring up at the ceiling, looking rather depressed. I shook my head. Jack had also warned me that his fatherâs spirits werenât as they had been in the past and that I probably should prepare myself.
âKnock, knock,â I called. I expected Jed to answer, but he didnât even turn his head. He just lay there staring up at the ceiling.
I frowned to myself and stepped inside of his room. âYou up for visitors, old man?â I called out, smiling to myself because I knew that would get his attention.
âWho the hell wants to visit this old man?â he called out.
I smiled, removed my hat, and proceeded to enter the room and sit down in a chair by the window. âMe. Thatâs who! How are you doing?â I asked, placing my hat down on the table.
âWell, fine I guess, now that Iâve decided that I want to die.â
I let out a laugh that came straight from my gut and shook my head. âWhy is that?â
âWell, I fractured my wrist, and you know as well as I do that if a horse broke its leg bad enough, it would be put down. I just donât understand why Iâm even still here.â
I let out another loud laugh. âJed, for as long as Iâve known you, youâve been a miserable old bugger. Iâm glad to see you havenât changed! All this talk of dying though, itâs got to stop. Jack is worried.â
âItâs the truth!â Jed said, turning to look my way. âYou, more than anyone, should have learned that by now.â
âYep, youâre right, it is the truth. Only there is one problem,â I said, leaning forward.
âYeah? Whatâs that?â
âYouâre not a horse,â I answered. âNow, donât let a fractured wrist hold you back. Keep your spirits up
