CHAPTER ELEVEN

GAVIN MANAGED TO finagle Rosalie into babysitting. He owed that woman a large Christmas bonus.

Now he was standing in the middle of Union Square, waiting for Moira to arrive. He glanced over and saw the place where Virginia had been waiting for him. When he’d seen her there, he’d been mesmerized by her simple beauty and he’d known he’d have a hard time keeping his hands off her.

Virginia occupied his mind constantly, made him think things he shouldn’t.

Was that why he’d agreed on this date with Moira and suggested this location, re-creating the date he and Virginia had gone on? Was he trying to prove to himself that he could find that spark with anyone, that Virginia wasn’t special?

He didn’t have time to contemplate it further as Moira walked over to him. She was dressed nicely, different from her scrubs. She was dressed as prettily as Virginia, only the color was a deep emerald, which suited Moira’s hair. It was also more seductive and instead of ballet flats she wore heels, which were impractical for the date he had in mind. Of course, Moira wasn’t to know that.

“Hi,” she said, her smile bright as she stopped in front of him. She leaned over and gave him a peck on the cheek. Her perfume was a bit overpowering and floral. Not homey like vanilla and certainly not subtle.

“Hi, yourself.”

“Where are we going? I hope it’s not far.” Moira pointed to her heels and then lifted the hem of her dress slightly, showing off her leg. “These are murder on my feet, but they’re so pretty.”

“I was actually thinking of the Fog City Diner.”

“Oh.” There was a hint of disappointment in her voice.

Gavin didn’t know what she’d expected. Obviously something fancier as she was decked out to the nines.

“Is there something wrong with that restaurant? I’ve been told it’s a San Francisco institution.”

“For tourists, yes.”

“I made reservations.”

“Sounds good.” Gavin could tell she was lying by the way she forced a smile. “Is your car nearby? I took a cab here as mine’s in the shop.”

“No, I’d thought we’d take the streetcar.”

“You’re kidding me, right?”

I guess I am. “No, I’m not kidding. I thought we’d take the streetcar and enjoy the sights.”

“How about I pay for a cab? No offense, but these heels are a little much for a streetcar.”

“Sure.” What could he say to that, no? Gavin trailed behind Moira as she marched over to a taxi stand at a nearby hotel. It didn’t take long before they were both settled into the back of the cab. Moira snuggled up next to him, her floral scent mixed with the spicy smell permeating the cab, making his stomach turn.

Virginia had had no problem riding the streetcar. In fact, it had seemed to enhance the experience of that night. It had been fun. Virginia wasn’t high-maintenance. He had an inkling, going into this date, that Moira was high-maintenance.

Did he really want to date someone who was?

This wasn’t for the long term, he reminded himself again.
