Chapter Three
I’d been feeling a little anxious, aggravated by the pain in my back from sleeping on that lumpy sofa. I kept waking up off and on. I could hear Victor breathing in the other room. He spent half the night talking in his sleep and at one point I got up and ran to the bedroom when I heard him cry out my name plain as day. Shit. I thought someone had broken in the bedroom window. But he was sleeping peacefully when I got to the room. For a few moments, I stood there, watching him. He looked quite angelic as he slept, beautiful, sexy, and there was a moment, just one moment when I almost reached out and touched him. What in hell was up with that?
Now as I waited for the toast to pop up, I swallowed some coffee and wondered how in the hell that moment had happened, with all the unlikely…damn it, Victor Reeves! Good God. Maybe I wasn’t cut out for all these trees and shit. Maybe nature was playing havoc with my…ah…good sense.
“Coffee smells good,” Victor announced as he appeared in a pair of sweatpants and a T-shirt. He looked sleepy, like a big, old teddy bear, and too damn cute.
I poured him a cup of hot coffee and handed it over. “Milk? Sugar?”
“Nope. Take it black. Nothing to dilute the effect.”
I sniggered. “Just shoot in our veins, more direct that way.”
“Um.” He nodded and inhaled the aroma rising from his mug. “Especially on those long stakeouts.”
“Yeah” I said. “I hate those. That crappy feeling you get at five in the morning, the taste all that coffee leaves in your mouth. I bring mouthwash.”
Victor looked at me. “In case you want to kiss someone?” He grinned.
“Yeah, I’m so in the mood for kissing after twelve hours in a car.”
Victor grinned. “I’m always in the mood for kissing.”
I glanced at him. “When your partner is fifty-two years old, waddles like a duck and has mustard all down the front of his shirt?”
“Well, maybe not then. So,” Victor sat down at the table as I put some toast in front of him, “you like your job then.”
“I do when I’m not interrupted in the middle of my vacation.” I took a seat and started to paste peanut butter on my toast.
Victor looked up from his plate. “Seriously, you were on vacation?”
“First one in ages. And I thought I told you that.”
“I’m sorry.” He made a face. “You could have refused the assignment.”
“You think?”
“Oh God, Julian. I asked for you because you know, I told you already, you were the best back then.”
“Even if you did, tell me again, I’m all about ego stroking.” I waited.
He met my gaze. “I wanted someone I was sure was up to this. It’s a U.S. Marshal out there, the one who trained me. Julian, if Flemings wants to get to me, he will. I want to make damn good and sure I have one of the best beside me when it happens.
