Chapter Three

Nine years later

Gigi’s, Manchester

April 2010

I GLANCE at my watch and I can’t believe it. It’s not even midnight. It feels like I’ve been here for two days rather than two hours. I’ve been off the scene for way too long. Six years, to be precise.

It’s been eight months since Lewis and I broke up. Fee and Cameron have been at me since Christmas to get back out there and meet someone else. So much so that they’ve actually got a babysitter for the night and have come to a gay club with me. This is an especially touching gesture from Cameron, Fee’s extremely heterosexual husband, who looked like he was being led into the Colosseum to be fed to the lions when he walked in here earlier tonight. He’s having a great time now, though, lumbering around Fee while she dances her purple peep-toe sandals off. She’s looking superfabulous tonight, but at Gigi’s, of course, it’s bald, muscle-bound Cameron who’s getting all the looks.

The dance floor is crowded with gorgeous men, and most of them look as though they’re about fifteen years younger than me. I think back to those halcyon days of a decade ago, when I could go out three nights in a row every weekend, pull a bloke (or two) every one of those nights, drink buckets of alcohol, and still wake up looking pretty good on Monday morning.

Not so now.

It was already getting old when I met Lewis. Once we’d decided we were together, I went into settled mode. Not straightaway—in truth, I took a bit of convincing to move in with him—but once I’d agreed, I went the whole hog. We bought a wonderful loft in a converted warehouse and started throwing dinner parties. No more cocktails, no more clubs. Just good wine and exquisite food cooked by my lovely chef boyfriend. We bought expensive kitchenware and went on great holidays. We had a very nice life together. A Sunday supplement sort of life, complete with organic vegetables and occasional yoga detox breaks.

And then Lewis told me he was moving out.

He didn’t love me, he said. He wasn’t sure how things had got so serious. Was he fucking kidding? Had he not been present the day he begged me to take the leap? The weekends we spent traipsing round looking at flats?

I wanted a house, but I compromised because he wanted to be near the restaurant. I wanted a dog too, but I gave way because he thought animals were dirty. I even gave up my hill-walking weekends with Simon because he was jealous of Simon and when I invited him to come along with us, he didn’t want to. I didn’t just make a life with him, I changed my life for him. And then he chucked it all back in my face.

Fucking Lewis and his fucking yoga detox breaks.

I glance down at the rum cocktail Fee forced on me before she and Cameron went up to dance half an hour ago, and I realize for the thousandth time that I’m still not over him.
