Table at Mamma Moo's

Vic toyed with his mug, watching from a seat at a back corner table as Mamma Moo and her staff bustled around her tavern. The room felt close to the point of being claustrophobic to him, but no one else seemed to mind.

His eyes flickered from one strange person to the next, taking in the seemingly endless variety. Two minotaurs were drinking boisterously with a female who looked like nothing so much as an insect hybrid. She had chiton shoulders and armored limbs, but her face, midriff, and chest were flesh and exaggeratedly feminine. She wore gauzy silks and there was a sword strapped to her waist. Her eyes were multi-faceted though and reflected the light with a golden sheen

At the table next to them were a group of canines. They were entirely furred and their faces had muzzles instead of chin and cheeks, yet they spoke seemingly without a problem and wore clothing that suggested — to his untrained eye at least — that they were well-off. Perhaps merchants from the ramshackle bazaar outside.

Another table hosted a man who reminded Victor of nothing so much as the walrus from Alice in Wonderland, complete with sweeping mustachios and a vast waistcoat that strained to contain his girth as he laughed along with a slim fellow with sleek brown fur and a body reminiscent of an otter wearing a loose fitting cotton shirt and dungarees.

When people walked by, tails in a dizzying variety followed after them, and the smells and musk of so many were practically overwhelming in the confined space.

It's all right. They can't see me. They don't notice me. I'm not here.

When Shy and Laina had declared their need to go to the tax office near the keep to get the rights to sell in the upscale market, they'd decided he would stay behind. There was too much of a chance that someone in the government office would realize what he was despite the mask and make trouble for them. Shy had surprised him with the suggestion that he wait in the taproom rather than alone. When he'd asked why he should put himself in the middle of a crowd she had said, "You need to get used to people, Vic. I've seen how nervous this place makes you, and there's no real plausible way we can keep you a secret forever. Better that you be allowed to watch the world go by for a little while, rather than be unprepared when it starts coming at you making demands."

They'd gotten him a dark gray raincloak with slits at the corners to give his arms free movement. It had a hood that would cover his head as well, so even if he were noticed, he was unlikely to be recognized for what he was.

So far the only person to talk to him had been Mamma Moo. It seemed that now she knew about him, the mask didn't make him background to her. He wondered if that was because it didn't work anymore, or because she was keenly interested.
