“I know you’ve been dying to hear more about my career,” Marilyn said sarcastically, a spiteful look on her face. “It would be nice if you were just as interested in me as a person, not as that movie star Marilyn Monroe. But since neither you nor anyone else is, I should be used to it by now. So let’s talk about it, once and for all, and get it over with.”

“Tell me whatever you like, Marilyn,” I said with what I hoped was the dignity befitting a psychoanalyst.

Apparently forgetting to care whether I was interested in her or not, Marilyn proceeded to talk about the development of her career leading up to the highly successful Seven Year Itch. Although she was their biggest star and made them millions, Twentieth Century Fox refused to cast her in the serious roles she felt ready to play, and continued to pay her the niggardly salary she had signed a contract for when she was a starlet.

Marilyn understood that the studio executives, in particular Darryl Zanuck, did not believe she had the wherewithal to become a fine dramatic performer. Moreover, regardless of her wishes, they didn’t want her to become a serious actress. She had been highly successful as a dumb blonde in comedies and musicals, and they intended to continue assigning her such roles because she brought in heaps of money.
