Chapter Twenty-eight

Devin was still sitting across from me as I was finishing off my sandwich. She was excited about the fight and wanted to talk about it.

“Walker, I've seen a lot of fights but never one that ended so quickly. Most of the time, the guys punch each other and then roll around on the ground until they get tired and somebody quits.

“But it was different with you. You went out there against three guys and ended it in less than a minute. That's what's really amazing. You took out those guys and didn't break a sweat.”

I had listened to her long enough. It was time to shut her down. “Devin, I don't like fighting. I'll avoid a fight if there is any way I can. But if I can't, I fight and do whatever it takes to end it quickly. If I can do it without hurting the other guy, that's even better.

“That fight today, those guys will walk away without any broken bones. Maybe a few bruises, but no permanent damage. That's the only thing I feel good about. The rest I'd rather forget. So, if you don't mind, let's not talk about it anymore. Okay?”

Kat was still driving. She'd gotten us back on 98 and we were heading west toward Panama City. We'd been on the road about fifteen minutes when she called out, “Walker, I need some help up here.”

She was up front alone; Devin and I were still at the kitchen table. I got up and walked to the front to see what she wanted. “What do you need?”

She pointed at the dark gray clouds moving in from the gulf off to our left. “I think we're heading into a storm. The wind is starting to push me all over the road. If it comes up a storm, I don't want to be driving.”

The thing about a motorhome is you have to be careful when there's a lot of wind, especially when the wind is coming in from the side. A sudden gust can push the motorhome off the road or into oncoming traffic. To compensate, you have to be ready to steer into the wind just enough to keep the front of the coach pointed in the right direction. But if the wind stops, you have to straighten the wheel to keep it out of the ditch.

In the afternoon storms that are common in Florida in the summer, winds can gust up over fifty miles an hour, making it dangerous to be on a narrow road in a high profile vehicle like a motorhome. For a new driver like Kat, it can be terrifying.

With the storm quickly approaching, I said, “Pull over the first place you see with enough room to park.”

We were just getting into the small town of Mexico beach. The narrow strip of white sand of the Gulf of Mexico was on our left, small shops and stilt houses on our right. Kat slowed and started looking for a place to pull over.
