This emphasis on the character over story is evident in the way that Marvel superheroes and villains are able to transfer to other adaptations (and media forms) using storylines not found in their original comics. In the Sheuisha and Marvel stories, whether One Piece or Iron Man (which has also been adapted into an anime), the characters are the stars. The story is not the star. Thus, it becomes possible to transpose the characters outside of the original storyline if done carefully. This has exciting implications for video games and merchandising, tooâvideo games are heavily intertwined with manga/anime.e A Japanese publishing executive explained to me that Shueisha manga (and thus the animes based on those works) tended to be character-focused, whereas Kodanshaâs manga tended to be more story-focused. It is no secret that this kind of âcross-platformingâ is exactly what companies like American movie studios aspire to.f
After a manga becomes successful, the potential licensee (including for anime and live-action adaptations) would have to prove their trustworthiness [to the publisher and mangaka] to protect the image and reputation of the underlying brand. Ian Condry affirmed, âAt the manga companies, theyâre very touchy and careful when it comes to making anime. Theyâve said to me directly that, âWe donât mind anime being made as long as it doesnât hurt the brand, but if it might hurt the brand then we definitely donât want it because thatâs the whole point of managing the brand and the characters.ââ2
