As if Parker has summoned my twin with his words, Sloane asks from the doorway of Hazel’s bedroom, “What do you need me for?”

Despite how much I don’t want to notice it, the way Parker and Hazel’s eyes both light up with joy at the sight of Sloane is undeniable.

After they make quick work of explaining their predicament to my sister, she says confidently, “I’ve got this covered.”

Soon, the three of them are talking about tight buns, curly ponytails, winged eyeliner, and sparkly costumes. I couldn’t be more out of my element, if I tried.

Realizing that I’m certainly not needed here, I get up from my spot next to Parker on the child’s bed and wander into the living room. Although I miss being so close to the man I secretly love, I clearly don’t belong in their lives.

Sloane is the one they need. She’s a girly-girl, who can step in and effortlessly fill in the few parenting gaps where Parker isn’t able to excel.

Putting me into the mix would be more like adding in a second father, rather than a mother. Parker is right. Sloane is the better choice for them. It’s too bad that she doesn’t see that.

It would crush my heart into a million pieces for the two of them to hook-up, but I would find a way to handle it because all I really want is for Parker to be happy. Sloane would make him and Hazel far happier than I ever could.

It’s tempting to run out to the car and leave the three of them here together, but I’m well aware that hiding from problems never solves anything. If Sloane ever wakes up and realizes what an amazing catch Parker is, I’ll just have to find a way to plaster on a smile and deal with it.

When the adults finally emerge from the child’s bedroom, I force my eyes not to stare at Parker’s arm slung casually around Sloane’s shoulders. Even though it’s the same type of easy friendliness he shows me, it feels somehow different between them.

Sloane has ridden in on her bedazzled princess chariot and saved their day. I wish it had been me, but I am completely clueless about all things frilly. There’s no changing that at this late stage in our lives.

Parker turns to take both of Sloane’s hands within his before saying, “Thank you so much. You are an absolute lifesaver. We’ll see you tomorrow?”

“Absolutely,” she assures him with her perfect smile.

I feel like shouting at them that this is supposed to be my special date with Parker, not Sloane’s, but that type of childish reaction wouldn’t accomplish anything.

Instead, I give them a fake smile and do my best to keep the emotion out of my voice as I say, “Thanks for a great fake-date, Parker.”

He can barely take his eyes off of Sloane long enough to respond to me. “You bet, bestie.”

Unable to stand being so close, yet so far from him a moment longer, I turn and scurry out the door.
