Four days later, as I was shopping at a local jet ski outlet near my home in the Sacramento area, I received a call from Detective Meredith.

“Well, Eva, your female instincts were spot on. Our person of interest just became a primary suspect. He used one of his aliases to buy that Kawasaki jet ski. Turns out the DEA has been searching for this scumbag over a year. He was under surveillance for a while but then he disappeared. They confirmed he’s a major distributor for the Tijuana drug cartel. Goes out in the ocean just south of here to collect drop-offs. Packets of cocaine, meth, heroin... you name it. He and a gangbanger of his meet up with a fentanyl supplier to mix up batches, and this scumbag’s ex—or murdered girlfriend, that is—was one of his street distributors. She got caught stealing merchandise and keeping her profits. The usual crapola with the cartel. They have a problem, they make it go away. Permanently.”

He filled me in with a few more details in his investigation, apparently trusting me to be discreet.

“That spot of blood on the Kawasaki was his, not the woman’s. But the ME concluded she was killed early that morning, before the rental jet ski company opened. We believe the woman was driving the Kawasaki. The perp, one Javier Gonzaga, was sitting behind her when he put a bullet in her head. He apparently deep-sixed the gun, a thirty-eight caliber, then pushed her into the bay. Cleaned up the jet ski. Came back later to see if she’d been carried out to sea.”

“So you arrested him?”

“You betcha. Caught him when he came out to his car. We think he stopped in the hotel gift shop on his way out, which gave us time to set up an ambush. Your spotting him and his jet ski at the hotel was vital, you have no idea.”

“Good,” I said softly. “Glad I could help. Hope the SOB spends the rest of his life in prison.”

“We’ll do our best to make that happen. You certainly gave me and my DEA pals a great Christmas gift.” He paused while I made sounds of gratitude, then he shocked me. “If you have no plans, I’d like to fly up tomorrow and spend New Year’s Eve with you.”

I had to consciously unlock my open mouth. “New Year’s Eve? I—I’m going to a friend’s party and... and I’d love you to come with me... but it’s just a... local party.”

“Great, but I’d like to take you to dinner before the party... if it’s not too late to make reservations. Sky’s the limit.”

I recovered enough to suggest a possible restaurant and hotel where he could stay and that I would book both. After all, he was still a stranger and I wasn’t that impulsive.

When we clicked off, I grinned, happy with myself, my female instincts, and my new male friend. Then I envisioned the young woman’s floating body, wearily hung my head and exhaled. I didn’t know
