There would be a three-day stopover in Manila, but because that first day was Paul’s birthday, Jason told him that he and some of his buddies had the whole day mapped out for Paul’s entertainment. In their party would be Jason, his assistant, John Derringer, the chief Officer, Vladimir Pulaski (a native of Poland who spoke near-perfect English), Roy, Denny, Mark, plus the only two female employees brave enough to join this gang of hellbent males—Jenny Joiner, Doc Albertson’s young nurse, and Madge Barton, one of the ship’s switchboard operators. Madge was a pretty and vivacious brunette in her mid-twenties and although Paul didn’t realize it until that little jaunt, she and his bitterly divorced co-worker, Roy Tolliver, had been engaged in a very surreptitious shipboard romance for some time now. Now, when Paul saw these two together, he realized they must have been on fairly intimate terms for some time, judging by the idolatrous looks Madge gave Roy without appearing to care very much who noticed. Assuming this was a genuine love match, Paul later found time to tell Roy how happy he was for him. “As long as you two don’t get careless enough to drop your guard while on duty.”

“Oh, come on, Paul,” Roy had said jokingly. “Living dangerously is half the fun of a fling like this. You’d be surprised at some of the secret little places Madge finds for us to hump our troubles away. I swear, that girl’s insatiable, and so inventive.”

“Really?” Paul said, somewhat surprised by this cavalier attitude. “Then, apparently, it’s not serious between you two. I was almost sure you were secretly engaged, or…or something.”

“Engaged? You’ve got to be kidding. You don’t think I’d want to marry a little curbstone free-for-all like Madge Barton, do you? No, indeed! This is just a little harmless bangathon, to break the monotony. You really ought to try it more often, Paul, and not only when you’re ashore. Believe me, there are lots of ways to get your jollies in transit, if you’re clever enough and discreet.”

The term “bangathon” had so depressed Paul after that conversation that he vowed never to take such reckless chances while on board ship, no matter how sorely he might be tempted. But little did he know that in a few years’ time he would be ready to eat those words, with considerable relish.

As for Jenny Joiner, she was a buxom lady in her early thirties, with fiery red hair and a temper to match, should any man get the wrong idea about the state of her morals. Jason told Paul she had once read him the Riot Act when he had tried to give her a “helping hand” in a manner she wasn’t ready for. She told him she had signed up to be ship’s nurse because she’d always had a wanderlust, adding that the kind of lust he had in mind did not appeal to her.

Jason didn’t believe her, of course. “They all talk like that at first, until I let them get close enough to me to get hooked.
