“Mama came up with a cure right away. What remedies did the doctor offer?” I asked once we were on our way home.

“He prescribed something called, Digitalis. From everything the doctor said, your mother wasn’t far off about my blood possibly being too thick. But maybe I need to check with him to see if it is safe to drink her tea and take his prescription at the same time.”

I could tell by his expression Theodore wasn’t looking forward to Mama’s unconfirmed sassafras tea cure. However, I knew his only hope was a loophole from Dr. McFarnz.

“You heard what he said to me. I’m supposed to drink lots of milk. Oh, and he gave me a prescription for A and D vitamins.”

“I know, I was really pleased to hear him say how healthy you are. We’ll get both our prescriptions tomorrow. It’s too late to get them today.”

“We should stock up on saltine crackers too. He said if they were working for the morning sickness, I should keep eating them. And, I still have the corks Mama brought me, if I start having leg cramps again.”

“Well now, you will have a pair of my shoes under the bed and me in it this time. That’s bound to make things better.” Theodore teased.

“I know the doctor said my cooking didn’t cause your problems, but I don’t want to add to them either. I’m going to try to fix less fried foods from now on.”

“Let’s don’t go overboard now. He didn’t say I couldn’t have any fried foods at all. I love how you’ve learned to fix fried chicken. Also, you and Scarlett have only made my life happier. And happier makes healthier, in my book.”

“Maybe that is one reason I am so healthy these days too.”

We smiled together.

“Hey, is that Deke McCrady walking on the edge of the road?”

“It looks like him. Wonder why he’s walking?” I questioned.

Theodore slowed the car to a crawl and rolled the window down. “Hey Deke, where you headed?”

“My old car won’t start again. I was walking to Larson Strom’s place to get him to come back and look at it.”

“His place is on our way. Hop in and we will drop you off.”

“Hello Miss Lucretia. How are you today?”

“I’m fine. Thank you,” I replied.

“Deke, this little lady is more than fine. We just found out we may be having another baby.” Theodore was so bursting with pride he couldn’t contain himself.

“Holy mackerel! Didn’t y’all just have one?” Deke asked?

“Yes, and now we’re having another one,” Theodore sounded annoyed.

“What do you think is wrong with your car, Deke?” I didn’t know a thing about cars, but that was the first question that popped in my mind to sway the conversation.

“I don’t know, Ma’am. But I’m sure Larson can figure it out.”

Realizing he had rubbed Theodore the wrong way, Deke tried to make amends. “I’m sorry, Mr. Dalton. That was a crazy thing for me to say about y’all having another baby. Guess it just took me by surprise.
