CHAPTER 6

Lucky kept his next planned date as secretive as the last. He bet he could’ve had a big career in espionage if keeping a gorgeous kindergarten teacher guessing was any indication. Jack played along like a champ when Lucky dragged him from his empty classroom two hours after school. They had a quick meal—breakfast for dinner—at Bettie’s then walked down Main Street holding hands, to where Lucky had left his truck.

“Still not telling me where we’re going?” Jack asked with an elbow to Lucky’s ribs.

“To my truck.”

Jack snorted out a big breath. “That’s it. Just to your truck? Planning on getting some action in there?”

“Nope.”

That made Jack laugh. “Should I prepare myself for cold and pain?”

Lucky squeezed his hand. “You didn’t have any pain from skating. Drama queen.”

“I had a blister or two.”

They stopped abruptly and Lucky turned Jack to face him. “You didn’t tell me that. Should we stop and get those blister bandaids? I hear they work really good. I should have moved my truck before we ate. Or we could take yours. Do you wanna go back?”

Jack tugged Lucky’s arm so it was around his waist, draping it further as he crowded Lucky’s personal space. “I thought I was a drama queen?” he said, self-satisfied. “Do I even look like I’m limping?”

“Kindergarten teachers are supposed to be kind,” Lucky huffed. He pressed a kiss to the side of Jack’s mouth nonetheless. “You’re going to get a rep for meanness. But if you need me to, I can bring the truck to you.”

With a shake of his head, Jack pressed his shoulder into Lucky’s collarbone. “I’m sure the sunshine and rainbows that follow you around will protect me and make all my pain disappear.” Jack was definitely a sarcastic bastard sometimes. Lucky loved that about him.

“Shaddup,” he said. “Keep moving before I give you a blister on your ass.” Jack hesitated. He opened his mouth, but Lucky snapped it shut with a finger over his lips. “Don’t even go there. You need clean thoughts for where we’re going. Think you can manage that, Mr. Jack?”

“If you can. Lay on, MacDuff.”

“I think you said that wrong. It’s lead on, right?”

“Common misconception among non-Shakespeare fanatics.”

Lucky’s eyes widened and he chuckled under his breath. “Shakespeare fanatic? Guess I’m still learning how much of a dork you really are.”

“I warned you.”

Eventually they arrived at the parking lot near the arena, immediately climbing into the colder-than-fuck vehicle. The temperature had been milder during the day, but obviously his truck hadn’t gotten the memo. Lucky blew on his hands before starting it up, trying to breathe downwards so he didn’t fog up the windows on top of the thin sheen of ice on the outside of the windshield. He was sure he left his mitts on the seat, but damned if he could find—

“Looking for these?” Jack asked as he waggled the wool pieces of heaven in Lucky’s face. “Told you I could be useful.”

Lucky grinned at him, reaching across to swipe Jack’s hood off so he could steal a kiss and take advantage by burying his fingers in Jack’s hair.
