Chapter 5

When I walked out of the bathrooms, I slid back into my seat at the bar. Luckily, it was still there, and I scowled at the glass of water sitting next to my empty whiskey glass. Damn them for caring. But they were right. Even though I wanted another drink to take away the pain, I needed to sober up before I could drive. I sipped my water and glanced at Ray as he came out from the back. He caught my eye and blew me a kiss across the bar. It made my heart flutter with the love I felt for him. We could never be an actual couple. We wouldn't work, but I loved him in a different way.

I turned back to my glass and pondered how long it might take me to sober up enough to drive. I briefly contemplated a cab, but then I’d have to leave my car and I wasn’t entirely fond of the thought. I might anyway, just so I could leave. Maybe sleep was what I needed now. I stood and turned right into someone.

“I’m so sorry,” I started.

“You have got to stop apologizing to me,” the familiar voice said.

Maddox stood right in front of me, his hands on my arms. My mouth must have dropped open because it suddenly felt dry, and I felt embarrassment all over again. Why did I keep running into him?

“Oh, hi. I was just…”

“Leaving?” he finished for me.

“Um, yeah.”

“Why is it you are always in a hurry to leave after you bump into me?” he asked.

“I… don’t know. I guess just bad timing,” I replied. I didn’t know what else to say.

"Why don't you sit and have a drink with me? Unless you are here with someone else?"

What was I supposed to say to that? No, that's fine. I'm going to go home and sleep off this miserable day and hope tomorrow is a bit better.

“Stan cut me off already,” I said instead.

“Boyfriend?” he asked.

I laughed.

“No. Stan is the owner. I don’t have a boyfriend.”

“Interesting. Well, then you can have something non-alcoholic while you tell me why you still seem so down.”

I'll give it to him. He was charming. Usually, Ray was the only one that had that sort of effect on me. I was all set to leave, but I found myself wanting to talk to him. He seemed genuinely interested in me, and what could it hurt? I was only delaying the inevitable.

“Okay, I’ll stay. But not too long. I’m supposed to go to work tomorrow.”

“That’s fine. I just wanted to get to know you a little.”

“Why?” I asked before I thought about how rude it sounded.

He laughed.

“Because you seem like a very interesting person.”

“You don’t know anything about me. How could you think I'm an interesting person?”
