Chapter 10
“Yeah. P for perfect.” Jacob left it at that when the truth was the P stood for prime, as in prime breeding stock.
“I’m sorry.” Paul tenderly caressed the mark. “What can I do?”
“Nothing.” Jacob felt exhausted from his inability to maintain an even emotional state. He was tired then energetic, angry then sad, aroused then disinterested. Everything had come flooding back to Jacob when Dooley mentioned the compound where they’d found Chance. As the men of the ranch sat and spoke quietly about the situation, Jacob was rocked by a flood of pictures surging through his mind. Just as Paul speculated, his memory was very visual. The place where he’d been kept was called Hard Stone Sanctum. It was a joke based on the name of the original sanctuary where Jacob had been born. That was the place that had spawned the rebels, but Jacob had only spent a few years with the original group. He had vague memories of feeling safe. Of being loved. He was different for some reason, but that was celebrated, not exploited. But then Radek and Karann had splintered off from the main group.
“They stole me one night.” Jacob would have slapped his hand over his mouth, but that would have told Paul in no uncertain terms that he hadn’t meant to speak. He was going to have to be far more careful about what he said and what he kept to himself from this point forward.
“Who?” Paul was standing there in the shower, the puff still in his hand.
This man had done nothing to him, but Jacob continued to be angry. Not at him, not at Paul, but at what had been done to him by other alphas. The only reason Jacob kept spewing out at Paul was solely based on the fact he was an alpha. Jacob needed to get it straight in his head that Paul and the men of the Rough River Ranch were not cruel. They had just found out about the compounds. Rather than get angry and push them away, Jacob should be embracing them and seeking their help. But there was danger with that idea. What if they went off to do something about Radek and Karann and ended up getting hurt? Or worse, dying? The thought of Paul’s stunning blue eyes closed for eternity shattered Jacob’s tender heart.
“Jacob?”
“Let me wash you,” Jacob offered, hoping that Paul might let the matter go for now.
Paul frowned and let out an exasperated sigh, but he dutifully stood still while Jacob washed him. Since he was unable to reach his head easily, Paul got down on his knees so Jacob was able to wash his hair. Something about having him kneeling before him gave Jacob a feeling of safety. Not that he didn’t trust Paul, because he did, but there was something so very sweet about his ability to turn the power position over to him without having some kind of macho alpha fit. The alphas at the Hard Stone Sanctum had never let their guard down for a moment.
