CHUCK

Chapter 4

“You want to wake up. I know you do. Your eyes are fluttering. Open your eyes, Des. Open them. Wake up for me, sweetie.”

Desiree could hear him, and it took all her effort. Her eyes fluttered open then closed.

“You can do it. Please open your eyes.”

Desiree slowly opened her eyes and saw the handsome man smiling broadly at her.

“Chas?” Her voice was barely above a whisper.

“Chas? You haven’t called me that since college.” He kissed her forehead. “Chuck, Chas, asshole husband. I’ll answer to anything now you’re awake.”

“Chuck,” she said. She closed her eyes again then opened them. “My head hurts.”

“I’m sure it does. Let me call for the nurse.”

Desiree closed her eyes. Voices. She heard voices. Then the beeps. Her head turned toward the sound. She opened her eyes and saw the monitors she was hooked up to. Desiree continued to look around. She was in a hospital, but couldn’t recollect why.

“Mrs. Roberts.”

Desiree turned. “Hello.”

“I’m Sarah, your nurse. Welcome back.”

“Thanks. I guess.”

“I’m going to take a few vitals and call the doctor to let him know you’re awake.”

Sarah was gentle, with kind eyes. Efficient as well. Desiree’s temperature, IV, heart rate, and everything else got checked out. Desiree could see Chuck in the background surveying and eyeing her nervously. She grinned at him to put him at ease. His shoulders heaved a sigh as he grinned back. When the nurse left, Chuck took the seat beside the bed.

“Hey, baby.” His relief was clear in his eyes.

“Hi.”

“You have no idea how happy I am to see you’re awake.”

Desiree rubbed her pained head. “What happened?”

“You don’t remember?”

“No.”

He hesitated, wondering how much to say. “There was an accident.”

Desiree continued rubbing at her forehead. “That explains the headaches. This egg on my forehead, and are these stitches?”

“Yes.”

“You have a cut on your cheek.” Desiree started to reach for him, but her hand was stopped with all the tubes. “Were we in the accident together?”

“You don’t remember?”

“Bits and pieces.” She closed her eyes again trying to see. “I can’t put them together. Tell me what happened.”

Chuck didn’t want to give her the information, fearing a relapse. “I’ll tell you after the doctor checks you out.”

“Okay.” She agreed reticently. Desiree stopped to think. “Did you kiss my forehead before I woke up?”

Chuck saw her questioning face. Not mad, but not happy either. “I did.”

“And you said something. What?”

“The same thing I said every time I kissed your head. That I love you and that I will always love you.” Chuck took her hand in his and let his thumb caress the top of her hand.

A stray tear fell. “I love you too, Chuck.”

“Don’t cry, sweetie. It’s okay.”

“Make love to me,” she told him.

Chuck sat back in his chair and blinked his surprise. “What? No. It’s not the right time.”

Why did that sound familiar to Desiree?

“Please?” she asked again.

“Baby, you are in a hospital and just woke up from a coma.” His hands waved over the equipment. “You have tubes galore, and you’re wearing a catheter.
