I spent the next day just watching movies in my dorm room. Heather was out all day with Mya. I knew Kennedy would be back any time. When I’d texted her, vaguely telling her that I was back early, she told me she and Isaac were already on their way back as well and that she’d be showing up at my door as soon as she could.

Kera texted me early on to let me know that she told Deran that I caught a bad stomach bug. She didn’t say much more than that. Part of me wanted to know how much Heather had told her—they’d become better friends over the months—but the rest of me did not need to focus on that. Reality would come soon enough.

Deran texted me to feel better with a gif of a cat eating soup. It might not have been much, but it gave me the feeling that we’d be just fine.

Just as the credits began to scroll for the current movie, I heard Kennedy knock at the door—or more so kick it. When I opened it, she had her hands full of take-out containers.

“Dear God, are you trying to feed an army?” I joked.

“Sir, yes sir.”

I took some of the bags from her and we both made our way to the small couch before tearing into the various cardboard containers of orange chicken, fried rice, and enough crab Rangoon’s to turn me into one. It didn’t take Kennedy long to launch into the stories about her trip. Maybe because I insisted she go first, focusing on the diamond ring on her finger—much like the one that adorned mine for a matter of hours.

She told me about the romantic dinner Isaac had planned for her and how it all just felt so perfect. And I let myself fill with her happiness, focusing on it instead of anything else.

Until she poked at my hand with her fork. “Where is your ring?” She had tilted her head, looking at me with nothing but curiosity. “And how did he do it? Come on, you teased us all with just saying you’re engaged but didn’t give us any details yet!”

I took a deep breath and looked away.

“Wait.” Kennedy drew out her word. “I know that sigh. That’s not a good sigh. That’s not a everything is perfect sigh. That’s a…” She trailed off, afraid to say what she already knew.

“A we broke up sigh? Yeah.” I finished for her.

“What?” She whispered. “What happened?”

“I—honestly, it is still just chaos in my head. I mean, one moment, we’re both on top of the world. Everything is great. And then the next, we’re fighting about Deran again.”

“Deran?” Kennedy asked, face screwed tightly in confusion. “How did he come up?”

“I accidentally texted him after I messaged all of you.”

“What’d you message him?”

“Where are you.” I pulled out my phone to show her the messages. “But I didn’t do that. I wasn’t even in his messages when Evan woke up. I think I accidentally clicked it and then either hit the autofill or the mic or something when I was focused on Evan.
