Sasha enters her condo, kicks off her shoes, drops her purse on the sofa and gives Jason an unexpected passionate kiss.

“You can get yourself in trouble like that,” Jason suggests.

“I enjoy your kind of trouble…Coffee?”

“Please.”

Jason approaches from behind, gives her a strong hug and a quick nibble on the ear before whispering, “No instant coffee today?”

“You’ve earned a reward, so I’m grinding beans. Actually, it became a waste to make a full pot with me only drinking it.”

“Let’s start a fire.”

“More body heat, sounds lovely. I love it. We should shower first, then you can be the doctor and…”

“No dear, sorry to disappoint you. I mean in the fireplace.”

“Spoiled sport.”

“You have wood and fire logs.”

“True but the weather is delightful outside?”

“It doesn’t have to be cold to enjoy the crackling and brilliant colors of the flames. We can dim the lights and sit close to the fire.”

“I’ve never known any man as romantic as you.”

“Do I take that as ‘Yes?’”

“My pleasure,” she replies while turning to kiss him.

Jason prepares the fire while the coffee brews, dims the lights and invites Sasha to join him on the floor in front of the growing fire. All is dark except the magnificent glow from the fire and a blinking green light in the distance.

“Is that your answering machine?”

“Yes,” she states after a brief pause.

“Why don’t you see who’s called? It might be something important. I count five messages.”

“Let’s not spoil this mood. There’s no rush,” Sasha states upon feeling an anxiety attack coming on. “I can listen to them later.”

“Pardon me, but is it me, or did your mood change slightly with the mention of it?”

“No, it didn’t. I’m just not interested in who’s called,” she replies more defensively than she would have liked.

“Excuse me for being persistent, but, I get paid to detect these kinds of things. So tell me, is there someone you’re afraid to hear from?”

Sasha stares into the fire with no reply.

“I am correct and I’d venture to say that the same thing upset you yesterday. Correct? I only ask because I’m concerned.”

“Jason, I can handle it.”

“Okay, handle it but at least tell me what you’re attempting to handle.”

“Jason, please.”

“It isn’t that simple. Something has you frightened and I believe I deserve to know what that something is. I have all night.”

“All right, maybe my fear will lessen once I tell you. I received a threatening call at work yesterday and when I got home there were more on my machine.”

“Someone threatening you is my business. Do you know who it is?”

“The one at work came from a Mr. Livingston. Well, he didn’t threaten me directly, but he did make strong accusations that if you read between the lines there could be threatening overtures. The ones on the machine could have been him or someone else. They weren’t clear; whoever it was muffled their voice.”

“May I listen to them?”

“You can’t. I erased them yesterday because I kept playing them over and over again.”

“Why would Mr. Livingston make threats…better yet, what is your association with him?”

“It’s a long story.
