CODY WASN’T so sure of that, and as soon as he walked in behind Brick, he thought he felt a distinct chill in the air.

“You don’t have a gun, do you?” Adelle asked, staring at him.

“You aren’t hiding a frying pan behind your back, are you?” Cody asked in return. She blinked at him with her big eyes and then grinned. Cody guessed things were okay.

“I see you brought your pup to play with the one Robbie dropped by here the other day,” she said, sounding disgusted.

“Now, Adelle,” Geoff said as he came into the kitchen. “That puppy loves her to pieces,” he told Cody and Brick.

“She poops on my floor,” Adelle said, turning back to the sink.

“And Jakey cleaned it up.” Geoff grinned. “Robbie brought the puppy for Jakey, but the little girl has taken quite a liking to Adelle.”

Cody did his best to smile as voices from the other room drifted into the kitchen. It sounded like the house was full. He immediately began to feel warm. Prince squirmed in his arms, and Cody bent over to set him on the floor and nearly toppled over as a wave of dizziness washed over him.

“Are you all right?” Adelle asked, this time softly and with concern.

“I’ll be okay,” he answered and slowly straightened up. There were so many people that Cody didn’t know where to begin trying to make sense of the conversations.

“It’s okay. They’re friends, not a threat,” Brick said softly in his ear.

Cody started when Brick touched his back. He had to remind himself that it was Brick. That was the only thing that kept him from whirling around and trying to take him to the floor.

“Let’s go in. I’ll introduce you to everyone. Some of them you already know but might not remember too well. They’re all Geoff and Eli’s friends and family.”

“I know. It’s just that there are so many of them and I’m not used to it.” He wiped the sweat from his brow. For a few minutes he was back in a crowded Baghdad market. He breathed in deeply and then released it. He hated feeling like this. He was a Marine, for God’s sake, and here he was, afraid to enter a friendly get-together. Granted, it wasn’t the other people he was afraid of, but of what he might do if he had a severe flashback or something.

“It’s all right. I’ll be here,” Brick said, and Cody took the few steps into the other room. Everyone turned to face him.

“Cody,” Eli said gently. He stood up and walked over to him. “Let me introduce you to everyone. You know Duane, and this is his partner, Arie. I know you’ve met Robbie and Joey, judging by the puppy you brought with you.” Cody shook hands with each of them. “I don’t think you’ve met Geoff’s dad, Len, and his partner, Chris, and his Aunt Mari.” They all smiled and greeted him politely. “Please make yourself comfortable. We have coffee and tea as well as soft drinks.
