CHAPTER FOURTEEN

It took two and a half hours to get to the cabin. Lance figured they had a full twenty-four hours to be together, before they had to head back for Emma to get enough sleep before work Monday morning. It didn’t make him happy she started her day at five, but he knew Emma, and if it worked for her, then he’d make sure it worked for him. Right now, he couldn’t make demands on her. He was thankful just to have her back in his life.

“Emma, honey, we’re here.” Lance leaned over and gently shook her awake. When he saw her eyes open, and she realized where they were, he looked at her and said, “Hey.”

“Hey, yourself. Did I really fall asleep?”

“Yeah, about an hour ago.”

“Sorry.”

“Don’t be. Are you ready to go in?”

“Yeah, I’m ready. Are you sure I have clothes here?”

He wiggled his eyebrows at her, and asked, “Do you think you’re going to need them?”

“Probably not.” She laughed, then let him help her out of the car, to lead her to the back door. Once inside, he looked toward the kitchen with a raised brow. He had called his caretakers on Friday, and told them to bring in supplies for the weekend. She shook her head, took his hand, and led him over to the elevator. Within seconds, they stood at the entrance of the bedroom.

Emma slowly walked around and familiarized herself with the area again. She looked back and asked, “Have you been back since Labor Day?”

“I spent Christmas weekend here.” At her look, he said, “Alone. There has been no one in my life but you.” He walked over, took her face in his hands, and devoured her mouth. Several minutes later, they broke apart, breathing hard. He had removed his tux jacket and tie before they left the wedding, and undid the first three buttons of his shirt.

He was sporting a sexy five o’clock shadow, and Emma reached up to cup his jaw in her hand. He closed his eyes and turned his lips into her palm for a soft kiss.

“I’m scared,” he admitted with a trembling voice.

“Where?” she whispered.

As he cocked his brow at her in question, she reached up and lightly tapped his temple. “Are you scared in here? Or in here?” she asked, as she tapped her chest. “Because in here...” She tapped her own temple. “...I’m petrified. But in here...” she placed her other palm over his heart. “I’m grateful to be here with you right now.” She stood there with one hand on his temple and one on his heart and allowed him to absorb what she’d just admitted.

As the tension slowly eased from his shoulders, he cupped the side of her head, and rubbed his thumb over her temple. “In here, I’m scared shitless, but in here...” He placed his hand over her heart. “...I’m thankful we are here, and working toward being together again.” They stood with a hand on the other’s heart, holding each other’s most preciously guarded secrets.
