Chapter Twelve

Penny went back home, feeling her body grow weak with the realization that she wouldn't get to see Jessie outside of their brief meetings. She didn't know how much she could take or how much she could handle before going insane. It bothered her to a significant degree, and it made Penny wonder if Jessie even thought about her.

She wanted to believe so, but she wasn't entirely sure. But, for now, Jessie was a part of her past, and she needed to figure out her life right now.

When Penny got back, she saw her father in the office.

"There you are. You're back late," he said.

“Sorry. I got into talking with him,” she explained.

“It’s not a problem. You been crying?”

“It’s nothing,” she said.

"All right," he replied.

He didn’t even seem to care. Penny looked around the house, realizing her mother wasn’t home.

"Where's Mom?" she asked.

“Oh. She’s a bit busy. She had to leave for a business trip,” he stated.

She looked around, noticing that her stuff was gone. Maybe it was a business trip. But something about this felt off, and Penny had no idea what was going on.

Over the next few days, Penny waited anxiously for her mom to show up. She asked for updates from her dad, but they were met with gruff responses. Jessie wasn't contacting her either and Penny felt more alone than ever before.

One day, when Penny was off from school, she realized her dad wasn't home. Usually, she didn't dare sneak into his office. However, something was going on that was bothering her. Something that made her wonder what was transpiring. Penny went inside and saw the papers that were on the desk. That was when she noticed the note

: Kill the story Monica will tell the press. We don't want anyone to find out about me.

She read the inscription in her dad's poor handwriting on a piece of paper. She looked for more information only to find the address of a hospital. It was one nearby, and Penny looked around. She had a bad feeling about it.

She decided to do her own investigation. She took pictures of this information, holding onto it so that she could show Jessie the next time she saw her. Then Penny stepped out of the office. As soon as she did, she heard the door open. Penny quickly hid her phone.

It was her father, looking at her with suspicion.

“What are you doing?” he asked.

“Oh. I just needed to get some food from the kitchen. Back to studying,” she said.

Penny left, causing her father to look at her for a little longer than she liked. There was something very wrong here. Penny wondered if there was a reason.

The next time her father was gone was the time when Penny would go to the address. It had been a week since her mother left for the "business trip," and she didn't know what was going on. There was something very wrong here, something that was eating away at Penny, making her wonder if there was something more.
