Chapter 11

Rory knelt before her, pushing back her hair. “You look like shit. Your tears are frozen to your face. You have icicles hanging from you chin.” He snapped one off and licked it. “Ready to go home now?”

Em couldn’t help it. She was still crying but started to laugh. “Salt is the one who is usually the ass.”

Salt chuckled. “Thanks.”

Em sniffled. “You’re welcome. Thank you for giving me some time alone. I don’t know if I figured anything out. Is it possible that Joel has lost his mind?”

Rory nodded. “Even vampires can succumb to mental illness. I think the fact that he tried to drain you says quite a bit. The Joel I knew would never do that. He had reverence for life. What was he like?”

“He was furious with me. He said that he still loved me, but even the sex was brutal. There was nothing soft and loving about it. Gaelic was soft with me. It bothered him that Salt was involved, but he was curious about what flashing meant. He made love to me after that and it was okay. It was Gaelic how he used to be. Joel didn’t even come in the room. He stayed in the back room by himself. That in itself was totally unlike him. In considering it, I don’t think that I ever slept with just one of them. We had sex separately, but they were both always in the bed when the sun went down. The Joel I knew is gone and I think that Gaelic is scared to death for his brother.”

“I think you’re right.”

Russell nodded his furry head. Em stroked his face. He was so very soft. She wanted more than anything to curl up in his furry warmth and have him lull her to sleep. Salt offered her a hand up. “Can I make a suggestion?”

“Shoot.”

“Wow. That’s an ancient reply. I was gonna say, why don’t you and Rory run? I will take Russell’s clothing and run with him. The two of you knew Joel and Gaelic better than we did.”

Em gave him a grateful smile. It would be nice to be completely alone with Rory. It had been a long time. “Are you sure you don’t mind?”

Salt smiled and she looked down at Russell. He pursed his lips into a puss that told her she was being ridiculous. Em bent down and kissed him on the nose. She stood and gave Salt a thankful hug and a kiss. He reluctantly pushed her back. “Well. Give me the damn pack and run. Enjoy yourself.”

Rory shrugged off the pack. “Thank you. Both of you. We will see you at home.”

He took Em’s hand and, without hesitation, they flashed into the night.
