Kate, Ellie and Don went in search of cookies and coffee. They were finally free to talk about the events of the day. Don walked to the coffee pots and began to fill to-go cups while the sisters talked.

“What do you think got into Mom? Do you think she intended to take out a crazy person?” Ellie demanded. “She could have died.”

“Ellie, think about it. Mom had one person on her mind: Ray. Her instincts kicked in and she reacted the only way she could. She wasn’t going to stand around twiddling her thumbs waiting for the police. Whether she admits it or not, she is in love with Ray and has been for a long time. Right now, she doesn’t understand why she put herself in harm’s way, but at some point, she’ll figure it out.”

“How can she not know how she feels? I thought when a person was in love they feel it, understand it, and want it.”

“When Daddy died, she was left with a huge void in her life. Over the years, her relationship with Ray has slowly developed. You know that Mom talks to Dad. They were best friends and lovers. That’s rare to find once in a lifetime, let alone twice. There were times I believed you only found it if you were really lucky. Ray walking into Mom’s life is the exception. When they are both ready, they’ll figure it out, but I think fate just kicked them both in the butt.” Kate smiled at Ellie and tweaked her nose. “We should get back. Everyone will be wondering where we ran off to.”

Ellie shook her head. “I still think Mom would know if she were in love. But since I’ve never been in love, how can I know for certain?”

The girls and Don walked into the waiting room. Jake and Sara were talking to the surgeon, Dr. Peters. Jake motioned for everyone to join them.

Dr. Peters spoke to the facts regarding Ray’s condition. “He came through the surgery with no complications. As we thought, the bullet did minimal damage, and we were able to repair everything. We will give him another pint of blood, and he’ll be on heavy painkillers for the next twelve hours to keep him comfortable, so expect him to sleep. We’re going to keep him in intensive care overnight as a precaution. If all goes well, he will be up and around tomorrow and should be able to go home in a few days.” Dr. Peters paused momentarily, waiting for questions.

“Doctor, when will he get moved to the ICU?” Cari inquired.

“Roughly thirty minutes. Once he gets settled, he can have one visitor at a time for ten minutes each hour, and immediate family only.”

Looking to make his point, Dr. Peters looked around the group, not sure who was immediate family. “If you have any questions, the duty nurse knows how to find me. I’ll be back to check on him a bit later.”

Jake extended his hand. “Thank you, Dr. Peters. We all appreciate what you did for my dad.
