Marcus stared at the shut door in a stunned silence. He hadn’t expected Liz to come home with these grand schemes of meddling in the affairs of the bear shifters to help him get well again. He had expected even less to have the embittered reaction to the idea that he’d had, or the easy threat that had fallen from his lips at the thought of Liz defying him. His pride being hurt by his hostess enough that the thought of being further rejected by the bear shifters on Oak Mountain was painful enough to warrant him being such an insufferable prick to the only living creature on the planet earth that had shown him common decency since he had been banished from his home.

Even before that it had been difficult to find people who could treat him properly. A woman like Liz was a rare find. Very rare. And he had just about tossed her out with yesterday’s trash and told her to go fuck herself for wanting to help him out even more than she had already done. He couldn’t blame her at all for being sick of his bullshit. What the hell was wrong with him? Why was he biting the hand that fed him? Or at the very least, threatening to do something along that line if she wasn’t respectful of his wishes to keep her the hell away from Oak Mountain and anybody who might be able to tell her the more gruesome details about what a fucking monster he was.

He paused, in awe of the thought. So that was what it was mostly about, wasn’t it? He didn’t want her to know that he was capable of such horrific violence. And it had bothered him so much that he had seriously threatened her with that same type of violence. He was a piece of shit. What the hell had he been thinking? He had to apologize.

More than that, maybe she was right, and he should get the hell out of her house. He couldn’t believe what a jerk he had been to her.

With a low grunt of pain, Marcus turned in the bed. He inhaled deeply to get to his feet, wincing as the hot, searing agony gripped his body once more. No matter how hurt he was, he hadn’t had a right to show up here like this and ask her to help him. Not after being so rude to her the first time, not after coming back and demanding that she give him his pendant back. And especially not after threatening her the way he had.

He slowly packed his belongings back into his rucksack and slung it over his shoulder, letting out a low breath as another wave of pain washed over him. He was just going to have to deal with all of this on his own, human or no human. He would see to it that she was taken care of from afar and deal with the ways he needed to clean up his own mess.
