What I Am

Nothing seemed to happen at first.

Alexis lay there, feeling a warmth from Phoenix’s hand, but little more.

Then, suddenly, it was like she fell backwards through the couch.

The sensation was so intense, so real, she got vertigo. She tried to reach out, to stop her fall, but her body felt strangely frozen, even as part of her fell away from it. She remembered what Phoenix had said about those bodies on the floor, and panicked.

That couldn’t happen to her.

It couldn’t.

She couldn’t leave with the rest of them… leave Devin and Jules and Vic and the others to deal with this alone.

She couldn’t leave Cal alone.

Some part of her screamed, fighting to get back to where she’d been.

She might as well have been battling smoke. She waded through darkness, through shadow, through nothingness. She fought to grab ahold of the couch, but nothing remained for her to hold onto.

It felt like one of those falling dreams… only she never jerked awake.

The falling never stopped.

Until it did.

Alexis found herself standing in a round, green room. It felt like she was underground, somewhere deep underground, but something about the space felt closer to a rabbit warren, or a fox’s den, than it did to any kind of secret, underground lab.

She saw her mother there.

Lana, her mind corrected. You see Lana, not your mother. You see Lana lying on a bed, looking exhausted, wearing a robe almost like a bathrobe. Holding…

…a baby.

She held a baby in her arms.

She looked down at it with utter adoration in her eyes.

Alexis watched her hold the baby with enveloping arms, like she was simultaneously worried she might hold her too tightly and not tightly enough. She wiped her eyes while Alexis watched, looking up at a tall male, a man who stood there, watching the woman and baby both.

He stood so still, Alexis hadn’t even seen him at first.

Now she looked at him, noting his handsome, large-featured face, his strong jaw, a detailed tattoo of a sun that stood out on his lower neck and throat.

His eyes shimmered a light, stunning gold.

“Isn’t she beautiful?” Lana whispered.

The man walked up to her. With tears in his own eyes, he nodded, bending down to kiss them both. He kissed Lana’s mouth first, then the baby on top of its head.

For a long-feeling few minutes, they both looked at the baby, stroking its head and face, playing with its little fingers and toes.

“I must go back,” the male said then, his voice filled with regret. “I must go back. The Red Dragon is being sworn in. They require me to be there…”

Lana looked up at him, worried.

“I wish you could wait,” she said. “I could go with you.”

But the male standing there shook his head.

“No. That is impossible. It is not safe for you, my love. We have discussed this. It is not safe for any Lightbringer there… not anymore. It is definitely not safe for any Lightbringer who is seen as my mate. He expects me to be a true believer.
