Chapter 31

The next day I went to see Samer but not to buy anything except for two packs of Blue Hill.

"Hey Samer, I want to ask you about the betting thing in those fights."

"What do you want to know?"

"How does it work? Can you place a bet?"

"It depends on the odds, man, and yes I can place a bet, but I prefer more secure transactions; I'm always guaranteed to make a profit, but there, who knows."

"I want you to place a bet for me."

Samer laughed although nothing in my tone sounded funny

"Can you do it?"

"Are you crazy, man? Do you know Abu Arab can kill us both if he knows about it?"

"I think he'd better not because you won't be able to spend the winnings I will split with you." The hook got deep in Samer's throat, and his eyes were on fire.

"What, are you going to bet on yourself?"

"The odds are in my favor, right?"

"I guess they are Mr. Bulldozer."

"Then I will place the bet on the other guy."

"Now he will kill the both of us for sure if he knows we are fixing the fight."

Samer didn't want to talk about it, but I kept talking to him about the odds and the money we could make in one night. I told him we'd do it once a month to avoid suspicions and until the odds go back in my favor again. He kept resisting my tries to convince him, but there was a lot of money in it.

"Ok, I'll do it, but I have one condition."

"What's that?"

"You have to convince everyone you got your ass kicked in the fight. You must take some beating. You can't just fall..."

"I get it, damn it. No problem."

"I will talk to my man in there. He will do it for me. I can't start placing bets out of the blue. Go get the money." I nodded and started on my way back to the room

"Hey, don't you want a bottle?" I shook my head and continued my way to the room.

"It's on me, partner," Samer shouted.

I didn't even bother to turn my head this time. I needed to stay sober. It was getting ugly. I had to throw the dice once and for all that night. I was still working on a plan to flee the camp, but I needed the money first.

I was on my way back to the room, but I felt like I was being watched. I stopped and turned to see, but there were many people I could not tell if I was becoming paranoid. I didn't want to go to the room right away. I walked around, took a few turns and waited, but I couldn't see anyone following me. I finally went to the room, as I turned the key in the door, a man passed behind me, and didn't stop. I got inside the room, and Pam was reading in bed. I came close to her and kissed her forehead, she hugged me and fixed her eyes at mine.
