When I got off work, my head was spinning. I couldn’t stop thinking about Diana and her argument with Rose. It felt like the more pieces I gathered, the less this puzzle made sense.

What did I actually know about Diana?

She was beautiful.

She was a good kisser.

She was sixteen years old and worked at a café in the afternoons and loved watching movies of questionable quality. She was into bands I’d never heard of. She had a Brazilian mom who managed the grocery store where I worked. And she and her mom had been fighting, and for some mysterious reason she’d jumped the fence outside Buckingham Palace one Sunday afternoon.

What if … Diana’s secret had something to do with the rumors about Prince Arthur?

My eyes widened.

After all, why were they going to the palace the next day?

And why was Rose so set on Diana being there?

Could … could Rose be the prince’s secret lover?

The idea floored me.

Was it really possible? She seemed so down-to-earth, so respectable, that it was hard to believe she’d get involved with a married man in such a public way. And Arthur! I’d always thought he and Tanya were the perfect couple—they were the reason I’d believed in fairy-tale love stories for so long.

But now I knew I couldn’t trust men.

My dad was proof of that.

Anyway, it seemed Diana wasn’t happy about the whole situation, which must have been why she and Rose were fighting. And based on today’s argument, it was clear she was being forced to do something she didn’t want to do.

Was Rose the opposite of the model mother I’d imagined?

Was she actually some kind of con artist?

Was she trying to use Arthur to steal money from the royal family and give her daughter a better life, but Diana didn’t want any part of it?

I shook my head, trying to get a grip on myself. Life in London had obviously filled my head with trash. Of course Rose wasn’t a con artist or the prince’s secret lover. There had to be a logical explanation I just hadn’t thought of yet.

All the same, my mind swirled with questions and theories as I walked toward the Tube station. On an impulse, I pulled out my phone and texted Diana.

Hey, how’s it going?
