Clint sat beside her bed, watching as the darkness of a winter night moved across her heart-shaped face, casting mysterious shadows on her full mouth and high cheekbones.
Dressed in a pale-green tank top and whatever the white sheet at her waist was hiding, Tara looked so beautiful, still a girl in so many ways—yet there was no denying she was all woman.
He’d seen the evidence of her luscious female form this morning, the candlelight in the bathroom illuminating every curve, every valley to gut-wrenching perfection.
Clint allowed himself one moment to recall the pale-pink creaminess of her skin, her small waist and round hips. And then there were her full breasts and thoroughly excited nipples. More than once today he’d imagined his mouth on her, his tongue lapping at those taut peaks, hearing her moan and sigh.
Just the thought had him hard as granite.
And he’d walked out on her. For what? To protect her? To protect himself from a need so strong it could barely be contained, a need he knew they’d both never experienced before?
A need that could ruin them both, lacerate the thin shield of control they both clung to?
The scar on his chest felt raw suddenly, and he curbed that line of thought, put all his focus back on the beauty before him.
Resisting the urge to inch closer, he sat back, crossing his arms over his chest. He had an insatiable need, a compulsion, to be near this woman. Not just for protection’s sake or to fulfill an aching desire, but something more.
It was becoming all too clear that when Tara was near, when her eyes met his and her voice uttered his name, he changed into someone he barely recognized. He was a man, instead of the walking corpse he’d been for the past three years. He was alive. And no matter how alarming it was to feel that way, the sensation was too good to try to quell it.
Before him, her long blond curls splayed about the pillow, Tara shifted in her sleep. Then her eyelashes fluttered and lifted. Soft green pools stared up at him with no fear, only a bit of confusion. He cursed himself. He’d wanted to be out of the room before she woke up.
She stayed where she was, her voice soft and a bit husky as she said, “Morning.”
“Not anymore it’s not,” he said with a subtle grin.
“What time is it?”
“Close to five.”
“I slept too long.” Startled, she started to sit up.
Clint eased her back against the pillows gently. “You’re fine.”
“I’ve wasted the day.”
“You’re right where you should be, Tara.”
She looked cozy and sexy as hell, and Clint desperately wanted to rip back the covers and crawl in beside her, beneath her, atop her—anywhere that skin grazed skin.
“But you’re not where you should be, are you?” She raised an amused brow at him as she stretched her arms over her head.
“Noticed that, did you?”
“I may be a little out of it, but that much I can tell.”
“You’re not out of it, Tara, you’re probably still a little tired, that’s all.
