“Sheriff, are you all right?” Kerry asked as she tossed another log into the fire. Even though the maniac was gone, she wasn’t certain he was dead, and the room had grown too dark for her liking.

“I’ll be fine,” Knotts grimaced. “Do me a favor, darlin’, and help me up.”

Kerry eyed the broken window the psycho had disappeared from, as she hobbled to the sheriff. She found she did most of the work lifting him to his feet, and feared her split foot would give out before he found his footing.

Both their heads twisted to the snap of a branch coming from outside the broken window. The guttural groan confirmed the monster wasn’t dead.

Knotts snapped his fingers. “My gun. Give it here.” He snapped again impatiently. “It needs reloading.”

Kerry tried to remember how many shots she’d fired. All she could recall was pulling the trigger until bullets stopped flying out. Empty chambers would do them no good if he came back.

She relinquished the firearm to him, and he deftly inserted a fresh clip with a full magazine. Leaning on each other, they shambled to the window. The maniac wasn’t lying outside, gasping his last breath. A cursory scan with Knotts’ flashlight revealed the fiend had crawled down the hill to the lake, into a waiting rowboat.

“Don’t worry, he’s badly injured,” Knotts said as they watched the monster crawl into the boat. “He won’t get far.”

The psycho pushed off from the shore, beyond the reach of Knotts’ flashlight, disappearing into the darkness. Kerry could feel the sheriff stiffen in her grasp, and had no doubt he felt her tense up as well.

“We’ll catch him,” he said, although she wasn’t sure if the reassurance was for her benefit, or his.

Kerry didn’t share his confidence.
