Was architecture really Hitler’s passion?

When Professor Ludwig Trost died, Hitler suffered a great loss. At the time Troost was Hitler’s preferred architect, and he believed him to be a genius. He wanted to build, build and build again. Berlin, Munich, Linz, Weimar and Nuremberg were in the middle of being remodelled. In those five cities some major construction projects were already under way. The next city on the list would have been Vienna. Berlin was the capital of the German Reich, Munich the capital of the Movement. Nuremberg was the city of the Party rallies and congresses, and Vienna was intended as the city of music. The plan was to extensively develop Vienna with some gigantic opera houses and concert halls. Models, sketches and drawings had already been prepared, but no decision had yet been taken. After the war I only got to see one of the drawings. Julius Schaub probably threw the rest into the fire he made on the terrace of the Berghof.

And there was even the thought of turning Berchtesgaden into a veritable gem. The plan was to build a Thingstätte (open-air theatre) at the foot of the Faselsberg, near the Jenner, intended to seat thousands.

I still have stuck in my memory countless models showcasing sport facilities and theatre venues. His goal was to have these other cities outdo Salzburg.
