It was late in the afternoon by the time they returned. Their long walk had been quiet at first, but Ella had started talking again when they neared the house. She seemed better now, relieved even, Cam thought. She remembered she’d felt like that herself, after visiting her mother’s grave for the first time. They’d walked hand in hand the whole way back, neither of them commenting on it. Cam had stopped telling herself it was just a comforting gesture because even though that was a part of it, it was so much more. The way Ella ran a thumb over the back of her hand, and the way Cam tightened her grip each time she looked at her… They both craved it. Cam reluctantly let go when they were in front of the gates. She needed distraction, a little afraid to be alone with Ella.

“Hey, can I take you out for dinner in town?” Ella asked, as if she was thinking the same thing. “Then I can finally return the favor after your fabulous cooking.”

“Sure. But aren’t you worried you’ll be recognized? We can order take-out if you prefer to stay here.”

“No, I’d love to go out for dinner.” Ella smiled as she typed in the security code to the gate. “I don’t often get the chance in LA, there’s too many paparazzi hanging around. I’ve brought a great disguise with me, just to be on the safe side.” She stopped as they waited for the gate to close again, hesitating for a moment before she looked up at Cam. “So is this a…” She sighed in frustration as she shuffled on the spot. “Is this a date?” Cam could see the nervousness in her eyes and didn’t know what to say at first. The question was so direct, and she simply hadn’t expected it. Excitement welled up as she tugged at the neckline of her T-shirt, needing to cool down. “I’m sorry. Forget I ever asked,” Ella continued, rambling now. “I thought maybe you and me, well, there’s been this… this thing between us but I might have imagined it and…”

“No,” Cam interrupted her, taking her hand again. “You haven’t imagined anything.” She smiled and held her gaze. “I’d like it to be a date so if you want that too...”

“Okay.” Ella looked relieved as she nodded. “Then it’s a date.”
