Paula Davenport felt like singing. Within ten days, the Agency had gone from virtually no reporting on the nuclear negotiations with Iran to two well-placed sources. It was amazing how quickly their fortune had changed…and this bothered her slightly. A little voice inside her head told her that this was too coincidental, too good to be true. She understood that this road could lead to disaster and heartbreak. She wanted to enjoy this feeling if only for a while. Such moments had become increasingly rare in recent years.

Granted, one of the Iranian sources had been “recruited” by that big clown Charlie Grable. Paula knew that Charlie had been a “suck-up” favorite of two of her predecessors, and now he was working with that senior suck-up, Chief of NE Division, Pat McCabe. She thought maybe it took one to know one.

This so-called recruitment of Charlie’s smelled more like the source had volunteered, although the congratulatory cable from McCabe to the delegation in Geneva had praised Charlie’s “diligent tactics of shrewd persuasion and persistence.” Well, not likely, but maybe. Even a blind pig occasionally finds a tasty morsel. This morsel had been encrypted “Condor.”

What was incontrovertible, however, was Condor’s position and direct access to the highest quality of intelligence. The reports had gone directly to the White House and the negotiating team in the field, and the negotiating sessions had played out exactly as the source predicted. Director Mac White was “deeee-lighted” as he put it. He hadn’t even flinched at the million-dollar upfront money for the follow-up meeting, nor the $100,000 monthly retainer. Of course, if you’re a billion-dollar hedge fund manager, this was truly small potatoes. His company held office parties that cost more.

The White House echoed Mac’s delight with glowing praise from the National Security Advisor. In fact, the National Security Advisor personally noted to Paula that the President was very pleased with the stream of high-quality intelligence which the CIA was producing and which was enabling her goal of a peaceful resolution of the nuclear deadlock with Iran. No mention was made of the fact that the President was about to start her re-election campaign in the next few months.

So, Condor was soaring. And Charlie Grable was flying high with him. And yet… Yes, and yet what?

The second Iranian recruitment had also caused her a few stomach flutters, albeit for different reasons. An AEOI criticality safety engineer had been carefully developed and brought on board and trained in covert communications. He was encrypted “Leopard,” and his reporting on the negotiations tracked with Condor’s, which was nice corroboration. But he also had provided indications of IRGC involvement in the nuclear program, which was troubling enough. Then the real “bombshell” (a poor choice of images thought Paula) was his story about the etching or impression of four containers of 90% HEU – a total of sixty kilograms. If his intel were true, then Iran already had enough material for a weapon. True, it was only an etching and not firsthand observation, but Leopard’s claim made Paula’s blood run cold.
