Stephen sits there as the sun climbs the sky.

He feels hollow, like an empty vessel whose contents have been poured out. He wonders if he will ever be able to fill it again.

After a while, the sun’s warmth becomes too much, and he climbs to his feet, walks back to the stairwell. He retraces his steps down, down, through rooms and chambers that are still dark, but now empty.

At the bar, Martin is there, alone. When he sees Stephen approach, he goes to work pouring liquids into a chalice.

Stephen sits, and Martin pushes a steel vessel toward him.

“Is this what I think it is?”

Martin nods.

Stephen lifts the metal container, tips it in acknowledgment of the bartender, drains the liquid in the glass.

He slams the empty glass onto the bar.

“Anything else, sir?”

“No. I guess I’ll be leaving,” he said, turning toward the curtained doorway. “But I’ll be back, at least for a few weeks,”

“Where will you go, if I may ask?”

Stephen stops, lifts the velvet curtains that lead to the exit, to that other world.

“Back into the world, to learn how to be human again, I suppose.”

He passes through the veil, out to receive his pardon.
