Luke had already replied.

[Luke]: oh god. Its so hot, u look amazing get it

I waited. I slowly started to slip the dress off and step out of it, My phone buzzed.

I stared at Luke's reply.

[Luke]: just get it

[Luke]: and some shoes

There was a long pause.

[Luke]: and some new lingerie

I stared at the phone, not really able to believe this was happening.

[Luke]: actually, ill get the lingerie. You get shoes.

An electric thrill went through me, and I felt myself getting that queasy, sea-sick excited low in my abdomen. It was unexpected: even as we were making plans for this adventure the night before, I had been thinking of it as a separate thing. An affair with Wallace, outside of my marriage. But now a new reality entered my mind: that it was something inside our marriage, that Luke was participating in. If he bought the lingerie, it was like he was in on it somehow. More than just an observer.

And it turned me on. It surprised me that it turned me on (if someone would have told me a week before that I'd be doing what I was doing and feeling what I was feeling that week, I'd have fallen off a chair laughing).

A new thrill was traveling through me now. I was excited to get a text, like before. But now I was just as excited -maybe even more so – if it came from Luke.

It felt kind of wrong, to be sure, to be enjoying having two guys on the hook, to be engaging in a sexual game with each of them, and for that game to be illicit in one way or another for each of them.

But it was giving me a high as well.

As for Wallace, I had felt a little bad when we came up with the plan. In the end, I think I wanted to believe that he was more interested in me as a person than a sexual conquest. So when I started to text him deliberately, to lure him deliberately, I felt a pang of guilt. Like I was using him.

Luke had noticed. “What's wrong?” he had asked.

“I don't know,” I said. “I feel bad. I mean, what if he's like... really only trying to be friendly. Or something?”

Luke had rolled his eyes, and of course I knew he was right: that was preposterous.

“Yeah,” Luke said. “Look, Lisa, come on. You're married. You're hot. You're the one that got away. He's not texting you to have a new BFF. He's trying to get in your pants.”

“I hardly ever wear pants.”

This made Luke laugh. I liked the way we had something together to work on and be complicit in. It was renewing something that had been slowly lost over the years. First, we’d had the kids, and then we’d all slowly drifted into our own orbits. Coming back together, to make this plan, absurd as it was, was bringing our “marriage” back to life.

I laughed back at him. Luke was right, of course, but I still felt a little bit bad as I led Wallace on.
