AS KATE LEFT THE COFFEE house, a panhandler approached her.

To describe the man as scrawny would have been a compliment. He carried a bulging duffel bag over his shoulder, most likely everything he possessed. He headed right for Kate, meeting her gaze.

Kate was prepared to give him a few dollars when he spoke and gave her the shock of her life.

“Be careful, Kit Kat.”

Her mother’s voice had come out of the man’s mouth.

“There are monsters everywhere. You can handle them, you always have, but be careful, please.”

Kate froze where she stood. “What the hell did you just say? Who are you?”

The panhandler stopped and stared at her. “Huh? What are you talkin’ about?”

He looked befuddled and there was no trace of her mother in his voice now. Kate suddenly felt she needed to clear her head.

“You didn’t just say something to me?”

He eyed her warily. “Look, lady, I don’t want no trouble. I’ll go my way and you go yours.”

Before she could react or say anything more, he was around the corner and gone from her sight.

Rattled, Kate went after him, but by the time she reached the corner, he was gone. She stared long and hard down the sidewalk, but there was no sign of him.

What the hell had just happened?

She steadied herself, willing the butterflies in her stomach to go away, and wondered if Weston wasn’t the only one who needed more down time.

Heading back to the parking lot, Kate noticed an ultra-modern playground along the way. Young mothers watching their toddlers as others sat on benches chatting, their infants in carriages, everyone enjoying the day.

As she passed, Kate noticed a bronze plaque mounted near the entrance to the grounds:
