Chapter Ten

When it was time to go to bed, Dimitri couldn’t stop staring at the bed. He hadn’t thought about it until now, but now that he did, he realized Haven hadn’t slept with him last night. He couldn’t even remember falling asleep, which was normal, considering he was wounded. He suspected Haven had slept on the floor, or maybe on the small couch, and neither would have been comfortable. It made sense, though. Haven was a bit of a mother hen with Dimitri, making sure he wasn’t in pain and that he had everything he needed, and since Dimitri was wounded, Haven would have wanted him to have as much space as he could.

Dimitri was much better now, though, and even though he was still reliant on painkillers, he didn’t want Haven to spend a second night on the floor. It wasn’t right, especially not with everything Haven was doing for him. He should be able to spend the night in a bed, and since there was only one of them, they would have to share.

It had been a long time since Dimitri had shared a bed with anyone.

He settled under the blankets, watching Haven as he moved around the small cave. When Haven stepped toward the couch, Dimitri knew he was right. That was where Haven had spent last night, and where he was apparently going to spend tonight, too. Considering how tall Haven was, his legs had to dangle from one side of the couch. There was no way it was comfortable or that Haven would be able to get much sleep, and Dimitri had to take the next step. Did it matter that there was only one bed? They were both adults, and they could share without a problem.

Or at least, Dimitri hoped so.

He was aware of his feelings for Haven, of how much they were growing, and of the fact that Haven didn’t feel the same way. That didn’t mean they couldn’t sleep in the same bed, though. Dimitri could keep his hands to himself. He might wrap himself around Haven during the night, but he suspected Haven wouldn’t say anything. He would slip out of bed before Dimitri realized what was happening, and he would never mention it. That was just the kind of man he was.

Dimitri cleared his throat.

Haven looked at him right away, frowning. “What’s going on? Are you in pain? Did you take your painkillers?”

Dimitri smiled. Haven was worried about him, and it made him feel better. It probably shouldn’t, but he liked the thought that someone cared, that someone wanted him to be okay. He liked that Haven cared. “You slept on the couch last night?”

Haven looked down and grimaced. “I did. But don’t worry. I’ve slept in less comfortable places.”

“I don’t doubt that, but I don’t understand why you should when there’s a perfectly good bed we can share.”

“You’re still healing.”

Dimitri stared at Haven, wondering if that was all there was to it. Maybe he wasn’t comfortable. Maybe he could tell Dimitri was attracted to him, and he wanted to stay away.
