Chapter Five

Caught

MEL

Wednesday

“Did you do that on purpose?” asked Erin as Mel pulled out of the town forest parking lot.

“Do what?” Mel took a left onto the main road, even though the most direct route back to Erin’s house involved going right.

“Find Baily and play therapist.”

“What are you talking about?” Had Erin unwittingly tapped into some kind of telepathic powers and caught snippets of Mel’s thoughts out of context? How else would Erin come up with something like that?

“I said I dreamed about Baily driving off a bridge, and you seem convinced my dreams are premonitions, even if you never say it directly. It’s a pretty big coincidence that we ended up spending the afternoon with them.”

“How would I even know they were going to be walking there?” asked Mel, ignoring that last part.

“You probably looked up their address and decided to walk in the town forest because it abutted their property. If we hadn’t run into them, would you have found an excuse to knock on their door?” Erin looked out the passenger-side window.

They rode in silence for a few minutes before Erin started talking again. “I think you need to see a therapist.”

Erin was probably right, but it would be a pointless endeavor since so many of Mel’s problems stemmed from things she couldn’t share with most humans.

“You’re obsessed with fixing broken things, and you’re going to end up arrested if you ever get caught snooping on someone’s computer by someone who isn’t me.”

“Erin, what are you talking about?” Mel hadn’t seen or sensed Erin around when they went snooping in Baily’s home office.

“You either took a really long shit or you were snooping around and are going to see if Mike can work his computer magic and find the scammers who stole money from Barks and Bits. It’s none of your business. My dreams are just dreams, nothing more.”

Can you hear me, Erin? Mel thought as loudly as she could, aiming the thought at Erin without actually projecting it into their head.

Erin didn’t react at all.

“You said you never saw the bridge you dreamed about, right?” asked Mel, referencing a conversation they’d had in the woods shortly before they met up with Baily in the town forest.

“It’s not a real bridge. It was a dream.”

Mel took a left, and in a few minutes, there was a sign that said “Bridge freezes first.” Mel dropped her shields as she slowed down and drove onto the bridge she had seen in Erin’s mind.

Disbelief and doubt built in Erin’s thoughts.

“This doesn’t mean anything,” said Erin, looking around as Mel slowed down more. It does look familiar. Maybe I have been here before.

“You said you hadn’t been here. How would you know it existed to dream it?”

“But…maybe I have been here before. Maybe I came fishing with Dad and Grandpa before Dad died. I would’ve been really little, too young to remember without coming back here, and if it was a place we went to a lot, Grandpa would probably avoid driving this route like he avoids anything that reminds him of my dad.
