Phil hung up the phone feeling much less like a stalker and much more like a winner.

I knew I’d get her if I didn’t give up. Ask and you get, don’t and you won’t, even if you have to ask every day for a week.

It was a philosophy that had served him well since middle school. His father used the line frequently at the dinner table, soothing Phil’s mother’s fears that he would never sell a thing again.

Being a manufacturer’s rep wasn’t easy. Nor was it easy to be a manufacturer’s rep’s wife who could never be sure when the next paycheck would be cashed at their bank.

“I just keep pitching,” Dan said as he looked at his son even though he was really talking to his wife while the three of them shared dinner. Pamela had it on the table at 5:30 p.m. every night come what may.

“Ask and you get, don’t and you won’t. All I can do is keep pitching and believing that eighty percent of my pitches are going to work.”

Pamela knew that was the strategy Dan used with her in high school and on most of the other women in St. Isidore. As far as she had heard, his 80-20 rule was working to perfection.

Lesson learned for Phil. It was a philosophy that worked in high school, worked in community college and was still working today.

It got him Mary Ann and a relatively long list of other St. Isidore women and girls through the years. Mary Ann was the first. At least she could take some comfort in the fact that she was not second, which would be nothing but first place in a long list of conquests, who almost to a female felt like a loser when they got dumped by Phil.

However, he never lied to them at the end.

“No, it is not you. It is nothing you did or didn’t do. I am just not ready for a relationship,” Phil said.

That was the unvarnished truth. He told all of them the truth. Phil also told the truth to them when they asked about his feelings, about what their future would hold, even about Mary Ann.

He might have played around on Mary Ann, but he was even honest with her.

Mary Ann knew the truth. Phil told her. She could stay or she could go. She chose to stay.

Each of the other women realized that she might just be another notch on Phil’s totem pole of conquests. Yet, each lied to themselves convincingly enough to believe she might be the one who would win Phil’s heart and steal him away from Mary Ann.

Mary Ann. Oh, yes, there was Mary Ann. Any man in St. Isidore and a few of the women in town would have been glad to spend their lives with her. More than several men did live their fantasy lives with her, in their imaginations, when they were inside someone else.

However, Mary Ann was totally committed to Phil. She was Phil’s first, or at least his nearly first.
