“So are the other Watchers always in our heads?” Addie asked him two weeks later, after she’d had a second encounter with the rest of the Watchers.

“Not exactly.” Lex sprawled out on the couch. He had to admit it was comfortable. “You can reach them anytime you need to, unless something has happened to incapacitated either you or one of them. You’ll find that Yuri’s the nosiest of us. He’s the lynx. His territory is right down the center of the US, but he stays more in the mountains.”

She shrugged as she pulled her legs up and set her chin on her knees. “Duh, he’s a lynx.” She frowned a bit. “But you’re a caracal, why are you here?”

“Here as in Maine, or here as in the states?”

“Yes. Well, and you’re not black. I thought caracals were from Africa, shouldn’t you be black?”

“Not everyone from Africa is black, and we shifters have moved around plenty, so you’d probably even find an elephant in the states if you looked hard enough. I haven’t, but I wouldn’t be too surprised if I did someday.” Lex laughed. If nothing else he had to admit Addie was intelligent. He wondered if it was because she was older when the calling came, or if all Watcher kids were smart. He didn’t remember Kenai asking really intelligent questions when he’d been in training, but then he’d found Kenai more than a little flaky. He still did, most of the time. “And why aren’t you a moose?”

She frowned at him. “Because my mother was a red tailed hawk. I got it from her.”

“Exactly. I...” he started to explain it to her, then he thought he might use it as a way to show her how to use her Watcher ability to delve into shifters and see their history. “Tell you what. I want you to find out.”

“How do I do that?” Addie put her feet down and leaned toward him eagerly.

“It’s actually fairly simple. It’s part of being a Watcher. You can see into people’s pasts, and get to know everything about them. Sometimes you even see their futures, but that normally only comes through the dreams.” Lex leaned toward her. “But one thing. It’s not polite to do this unless you’re doing it in the course of your work as a Watcher. Just going up to people and reading them isn’t nice.”

Addie nodded vigorously. “Okay. Show me, then after this I need to go upstairs and finish my homework. Dad will be mad if I don’t do it.”

“Yeah, that’s probably a good idea. If we keep your dad happy, things will go easier for both of us.” Lex wasn’t sure where the irrational need to keep Tucker happy grew from, but it was festering inside him and getting really irritating. “Okay, first thing, when you’re learning this, you’ll normally need to touch people to tap into their past. As you get better at it, it will happen when you’re just around people. From what some of the other Watchers say, it can be hard to block out from time to time.
