“TELL me again why we had to leave the apartment at eight forty-five,” Matt complained as their cab traveled through the Manhattan morning traffic. “That’s kind of early, isn’t it?”

Bradley merely gazed at his husband for a moment. “We had to get a cab and get to 45th and Broadway by nine thirty, didn’t we? Since the pickup point is right in front of a Starbucks, I thought we should plan for plenty of time to get a cup of coffee before we boarded the bus. Besides, Clarice and her friend are meeting there too.”

“What time does the bus leave?”

Bradley pulled the tickets out of his pocket and looked again to be sure. “It says on here we leave at 10:25.”

“I guess you’re right that we should get there—or should I say here, early,” Matt replied as the cab arrived at their destination. “I’ll pay the cabbie, and you get our bag.”

“It’s a good thing we’re only staying one night,” Bradley grumbled as he got out of the cab and looked around for their suitcase, “or we’d have two or three bags instead of just one big one.”

Once they were seated inside the Starbucks with their coffee, Bradley and Matt saw Clarice and a chunky red-haired young man waving and coming toward their table, coffee cups in hand.

“Hi, Bratt,” Clarice called out with a huge smile on her face. “This is Charlie. We work together at the library.”

Bradley turned to Matt and whispered, “When you said a friend from work, I thought you meant a girl.”

“So did I,” Matt whispered back. “Shhh. Here they are.”

After explaining the Bratt nickname, Clarice introduced Bradley and Matt to Charlie. Then Clarice and Charlie sat down with them.

“I’ve never been to Atlantic City,” Charlie said. “I’ve really been looking forward to this.”

“We’ve never been before either,” Matt replied. “I didn’t even know about this trip until yesterday. Bradley bought the tickets as an extra Christmas present.”

“I can’t believe you kept it a secret for so long,” Clarice said to Bradley. “I wanted to tell him, but I didn’t give in to temptation.”

“Are we all going to try to sit together on the bus?” Charlie asked. “No offense, but I sort of hoped to be alone with Clarice.”

Matt and Bradley chuckled.

“No. Don’t worry. And Bradley and I are going to meet each other for the first time on the bus,” Matt said. At Charlie’s puzzled look, he explained about the cheating game.

Charlie gave Clarice a quizzical look, but Clarice just laughed. “It’s an idea I gave them from something I saw on TV. I’ll tell you all about it on the way.”

“How do you want to do this?” Matt asked Bradley.

“I’ve been giving it some thought. How about you get on the bus first, I’ll wait about two or three minutes, and then I’ll find where you’re sitting. I’ll join you, and we’ll introduce ourselves.”

“Okay,” Matt agreed. “Sounds like a plan. And it’s a good thing we’ve decided because it looks like the bus is here.
