The Ranch

“Seize her!”, the sheriff's men grabbed her by her hands.

“Wait, no please don’t do that.” She cried out.

“She had stolen from us, she must be taken to the cell room but first, she would be delivered by the cleric and then locked up in a room. To take off all those evil spirits locked in her body.” Heather said.

“What? Mother no! I don’t understand.” There was a quiver in Faye's voice.

“Take her away.” Mr August ordered. And then the Sheriff and some men pulled Jolene by her hands. Faye tried to fight back but she was overpowered by the men and so she fell to the ground in tears.

“What she has done, I have done too. So you need to take me with you.” Faye cried out.

“Please, take me with you.”

The squeals of the train wheel rolling on the track had made it futile for the passengers to sleep during the day. And by dusk, its high-pitched whistles were like a forlorn call, incessantly vibrating the stapes in their inner ears.

Jolene leaned on the cosy upholstery seat resting her head on the cold glass with her grey hat over her face. It was her dad's favourite hat, one of his things she could keep. The puffy end of the three-layered bustle silk dress she had on, had not made it any easier to get on the train, so she had lost her Fanchon bonnet when she had struggled her way into it.

She had not thought that she would get to embark on a far journey all by herself before her next birthday when she would be eighteen. She never liked to travel, only on rare occasions when she would travel with her parents for certain activities in other cities. But now, she had no choice, she didn’t want to wait for another month before Mr Andrew, her father's closest friend, would come to take her along. She had received a letter from Mr Andrew a few days ago, informing her about his long-lasting engagements that will last him for a month. And so, he had sent her some money to embark on the journey down to Houston.

Jolene had never imagined that she would move away from Kansas city or settle in the second-class compartment on the train. She had always preferred the plush velvet seat that could be converted into snug sleeping berths, in the first class compartment couch. But she had unconsciously run out of money after a quarter of the funds she had gone with were presumed stolen at the beginning of her trip. She would classify her journey to Houston as an arduous one.

The two days in the train had given Jolene a rumbling stomach as she had only had yeast bread for these days and a searing head pain from the rustling sound of the engine of the train, and the constant roaring laughter of the hoarse voice from the men in the train.

“Are we there yet?”

“Are you there yet?” Jolene asked the skinny man sitting opposite her.
