In those days married women did not leave their husbands. In those days married women did not even dare separate from them. Women who did, became outcasts. Those poor souls who, after years of suffering had the courage to leave, were considered fallen women. They were shut out of society, and everyone put them down, or ignored them. A woman's place was next to her husband and her children. In those days it was not important how bad the husband treated his wife and children. A woman's duty was to respect and obey her spouse no matter what. Those were hard times for women.

Alba Francisca Dominga had a mean husband. He was not a caring person, not even a decent one. Daily he abused her and her children. Very often the police had to bring him home in a drunken stupor. Every time he drank, he became abusive and obnoxious. He was a rich and a well-known man in the small town where Alba Francisca Dominga lived with her family. Nearly everyone in Vera[1] believed she was very fortunate to marry the richest man in town. Only a few knew his true self. He was a man without feelings or principles.

After years of pain and suffering, after years of thinking about leaving him and planning how to do it, she finally built the courage up to leave him and her children. She couldn't take the children with her. How was she going to support them? She knew he was not going to look after them. She was sure that as soon as he realised that she was gone forever, he would hand the children over to her parents. In her parents' care her children were no longer going to suffer as much.

She ran away, with $100 pesos and a pain in her heart for having abandoned her children. She caught a train and went as far as she could go with half of the money she had. Alba Francisca Dominga was now in Chaco[2] in a little hotel in El Pintado, a small town at the edge of the jungle. Behind she had left her most precious treasure: her children.

Alba Francisca Dominga had arrived at the Hotel mid afternoon. Everyone was complaining about the heat: the porter at the train station who called the taxi for her, the taxi driver and even the hotel's concierge. She had asked for lemonade and was sipping it slowly, sitting on the large double bed. She had undressed and already had hung the few clothes she had brought with her. Her thoughts were dense and deep like the near jungle. Alba Francisca Dominga was trying not to think because she had just realised the magnitude of her act. An act of defiance, not only against her husband, but against her family and against society. The jungle noises intermingled with her thoughts and her thoughts became jungle and the jungle became Alba Francisca Dominga.

When Alba woke up it was dark. She woke up hearing her younger boy calling her.
