One warm evening, I pull up to the house and notice that my wife isn’t home. Confused, I call her name while pushing open the front door and receive silence in return. I know her all too well to be worried, though. Rosie must be putting in some extra time at the courts.

Our house is not far at all from the park where we play, so I change out of my work clothes and make my way down the front steps, towards my wife’s presumed whereabouts. The walk could probably do some good for my ankle, kicking it back into gear after a few weeks of trying to stay off of it.

The park is almost entirely empty, which is usual for an evening like this. Technically, our park is public, but it’s nestled up here in the hills of the palisades and far from the view any average passers by. There are plenty of neighborhood activities during the weekend afternoons, like our tennis lessons, for instance, but when the evenings begin, the wealthy elite better things to do, apparently.

As I step closer and closer, I can hear the familiar hollow slapping of a tennis ball rallying back and forth across the hard ground; the squeak of shoes and the occasional grunt of someone slamming the ball as hard as they can. The noises themselves are almost sexual, in a way.

I cut through a few trees and then follow a path down towards the court, where its green, rectangular surface eventually comes into view through the woods. I immediately spot Rosie, her long blonde hair bouncing behind her in a ponytail as she darts back and forth across the court, rallying fiercely. Her opponent, however, is unfamiliar to me.

I take a few more steps forward through the trees to get a look, but then stop short of revealing myself to the two of them.

The woman that Rosie is playing against is young and strikingly beautiful, with dark features and large eyes. Her face is girlish, just waiting to break into a smile after every rally as she encourages my wife’s performance. It’s a smile that is apparently contagious, because Rosie can’t help but grin as well, clearly enjoying herself out here.

Immediately, a deep pang of jealousy strikes into the pit of my stomach. I feel a strange tingle across my entire body, a simmering anger that doesn’t quite have enough fuel to ignite, but certainly would if it could. Despite their activities being totally innocent, I feel as though I have caught my wife with this woman’s tongue deep inside of her, giving her pleasure in a way that I haven’t been. I suppose, thanks to my twisted ankle, she actually is giving her a pleasure that I’m not equipped for. I can feel my logical brain and a frantic, animalistic rage battling within me, each one vying desperately for the upper hand.

Finally letting my suspicions take hold, I hang back and watch them from a distance, analyzing every movement as my jealousy boils.
